PORTFOLIO

PORTFOLIO is a long-term writing project that began on 12th January 2022 to explore the Channel ports. It is a slow residency using ferries and train travel to discover the destinations, cities and resorts in France and England that share the coastline of La Manche or the English Channel. Twenty four million people live in this area and enjoy the holiday destinations, pretty towns and busy cities of this Anglo-French Region.

Perry and Cherbourg

The inaugural publication was a chapter in an academic research collection proposing a new approach to deep-mapping for destinations and their DMOs. We focussed on Cherbourg at the northern tip of the ancient Perry-making region of Normandy, France.

Fieldwork in Cherbourg

In 2022 this library work was followed up with fieldwork in the city of Cherbourg on the trail of one of its most famous writing specialists, Roland Barthes. Initial travel pieces from this were published by Routledge in the 2023 book for travel writers and city councils. Link in the button below.

We hope our mixture of literary travel writing and academic research will inspire holidaymakers to enjoy more of the culture, literature and heritage of our shared region. For councils, hotels and travel companies we hope you will find ideas to create richer, more satisfying experiences for your colleagues and your customers.
