The 2010 Jaguars came into the season with some big questions after failing to reach Heinz Field for the first time in seven years and the loss of record setting wide receiver and quarterback Jim Giansante and Sam Johnston. The Jaguars lost the first game of the season to the nationally ranked Cocoa Florida Tigers in a game that was apart of The Rally at the Wolverina.
With doubters at an all time high the 2010 Jags did what all teams in the Cherpak era did best, win. The team pounded its way to the fifth straight conference championship and the number two seed in WPIAL playoffs.
The Jaguar’s offense was lead by a dominant run game. With the excellent line play of seniors Dustin Vissari, Chris Thearle, and Nick
Greer the holes were often huge for leading rusher, Ryan Ruffing and leading scorer, TJ Matrascia who together combined for 1594 yards and 25 touchdowns. Senior fullback Dylan Breisinger also added in 306 yards with 10 yards per carry average and a touchdown. The steady hands of Tom Greives, Mike Terpin, and Nick Raimondi fueled the passing attack. Tight end Bruno Natter and wide receiver Zach Schademan also contributed in the passing attack. With Greives being an all-state selection along with Terpin and Raimondi’s 18.1 and 29.6 yards per reception average it is safe to say that the passing attack was pivotal to the offensive success also. First year starters Ryan Crouse and Dom Presto who combined for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns through the air filled the quarterback position. Also, Mike Wainauskis was a weapon in the kicking game for the Jaguars. The team finished with 32.7 points per game offensively.
The defense was lead by an experienced group at linebacker. Returning starters Bruno Natter, TJ Matrascia, and Nick Raimondi along with newcomer Dylan Breisinger were able to form a strong core for George Wilson’s defense. Natter lead the team in tackles with the other three filling out 3 of the next 4 top spots for tackling. The secondary was also well seasoned with Tom Greives and Mike Terpin at the corners and Ryan Ruffing at safety. The defensive line was anchored in the middle by Nick Greer and Chris Thearle at the tackle, and senior Jake Bronder and freshman Angelo Natter at end. Bronder lead a great pass rush recording 8 sacks with Angelo Natter and Thearle also contributing 4 sacks apiece.
The 2010 season was memorable for everyone involved. There was a win over AAAA rival Baldwin, and televised win against Trinity. The main highlights though were defeating Belle Vernon 14-13 in a televised game where Bruno Natter blocked an extra-point in the final minutes to hold on to the victory and secure the conference championship and the dominating victory of Hopewell in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. The Hopewell team was lead by PA’s all-time leading rusher, Rushell Shell. The 2010 team kept the amazing streak of 13 straight years in the semifinals of WPIAL playoffs alive, but fell short of returning to the championship. They lost in the semis to eventual WPIAL champs Central Valley; a first year merger school. Central Valley was lead by a sophomore star and future big time recruit Robert Foster. Along with all the highlights, 2010 was the last season for two TJ legends, coaches George Wilson and Jack Garrity who retired after the season.
