1995
Cherpak is Hired, Win Conference
First year head coach Bill Cherpak returned to the team after spending a season as an assistant coach under mentor and long-time friend George Novak at Woodland Hills High School. And as a true testament to just what exactly "Cherp" was hoping to accomplish as head coach, a 2-8 team in '94, minus the likes of Mike Yablonsky, Brett Adams and Jeremy Maxa, was transformed into an 8-3 squad and Big Eight Conference Champions.
Under the new leadership of Cherpak the Jaguars, who began to display a renewed and redefined sense of identity, in turn re-established a winning tradition at TJ. An off-season weight-lifting program, weekly aerobic sessions, and a "losing is not an option" philosophy is accountable for much of the team's success, but so too was the dedication and willful determination of the entire coaching staff. The Jaguars beginning the season with a grueling two week summer camp entailing two, and sometimes three-a-day work-outs was another definitve reason the TJ Jaguars succeeded in their quest for a second straight Big Eight Championship.
The team would shut out their old foe, Belle Vernon, in first game of the year and coincidentally it was the only game the Leopards would lose during the regular season. Eventually they did win the WPIAL championship.
The offense was led by the passing of Mark Proud and the receiving of Justin Seimon and Buddy Shaffer, as well as a running game that included Jeff Bono and a line led by Brandon Yustince, Phil Larcinese, and Marc Ginsburg.
Defensively, they were led by middle linebacker Rob Perkins, Brandon and Larry Ging, Michael Kirsch, and Ryan Inks.
The 1995 year included a few school records including tying the most points scored in a single game record (53 points), Jason Scott's long 40 yard field goal, and a record breaking season from senior Mark Proud with new high marks of passing yards and TD's in one season.
The team exemplified the Jaguar tradition, and returned the conference crown to its rightful place. This would mark a successful beginning to head coach Bill Cherpak's place in TJ history.
