Senior Match Play Championship
Tilden Seniors - After 56 singles matches, Steve Smith has emerged as the Tilden Seniors Singles Match Play champion for 2022. It was a double-elimination tournament contested over 4 months. There were 4 flights of 8 players ( 10 in the 4th bracket) and contestants had the opportunity to play until they were eliminated with two losses. Steve Smith (flight one champion ) defeated Gary Palmer (third flight winner) in the finals match, and Robert Neumann ( 4th flight winner) defeated Cory Comer ( 2nd flight champion) for third place in the event. Steve will receive $60 for 1st place and have his name placed on the Tilden Trophy while Gary receives $40. Thanks to everyone who participated in the event which grew from a consolation division to a true double-elimination event. Attached are some representative brackets showing the progression of the matches for each flight and the championship bracket with the flight winners and second-place finishers in each flight playing cross-flight and semi-final matches. Only in the finals did two players play each other twice, which was one of the goals of the contest. These brackets are the best representation of a double-elimination tournament available and most of the contestants will understand them. Congratulations to Steve Smith who endured 8 matches and thanks to everyone who played.-- Cory

Round 2 results and a Summary through Round 2 are attached.
Bob Scott has established a commanding lead, but several players have a chance to overtake him if they have a very good day at Tilden in Round 3.
Remember, you only count 2 of 3 rounds to place in the overall SSL 2022 standings.
And, Round 3 is its own mini tournament with plenty of prize money. You don't need to have played in either Round 1 or Round 2 to participate in Round 3. Also, nearly everyone has a shot at some prize money for their overall finish in SSL 2022 if they have a good round.
Round 3 will be September 21st.

Your scores have been posted. Round 2 will be held on Thursday, July 21st and Round 3 on Thursday, September 28th. You only need two of 3 rounds to be eligible for the overall championship, and you are welcome to play even if you can only play once.
Jim Diederich came in first by shooting a gross score of 77 for a net 64 and the $30 top prize. Jim also accomplished the feat of shooting a score below his age. Will Glennon shot an 81 for a net 66 for a close second and $20. Lary Hanshaw, Steve Sandoval, Bob Scott, and Ed Seputis tied for third with net 67s and a $10 prize each. Jim also edged out John Gonzales and Alex Brown by 1 shot for the $10 Low Gross prize.
A bright spot for the day was the Pace of Play. Everyone did well to keep the tournament moving along quickly. Thank you.
We do need help reducing the number of late scratches and no-shows. We lost nearly 25% of the field (9 of 39) in the four days after the pairings came out. There are always 2-3 players that drop out in the last few days before every tournament for good reasons. But, it creates havoc with the pairings when 25% of the field drops out so late. We consume extra time slots that Tilden could use to generate revenue, we end up with twosomes, and friends that expected to play together get split up. Please do what you can to notify the tournament manager as soon as you know you can't play.
