Administration

Who manages the Away Tournaments?

Dan Gabe, Co-director of the Away Tournaments, contacts the courses and negotiates the contracts with them.

Gary Palmer, Co-director of the Away Tournaments, along with Dan Gabe, share the duties as Tournament Director during the year.  The Tournament Director serves as our club liaison to the course, creates the sign up forms, handles sign ups and announcements, and creates and sends out the pairings.  After the event, the Tournament Director does the scoring and sends out the results. He is the contact person for each event and responds to members' related emails and he coordinates the day of the tournament.

I didn't find an answer to my question in the FAQ's below.  Who can I contact?

Signing up

Who is allowed to sign up and play?

Our Away Tournaments are intended only for paying members of TPSGC with occasional allowances for guests such as at Silverado in January.  Guests and prospective members might be allowed on a limited space available basis and must be approved by the Tournament Director.  In some tournaments there may be a limit to the number of players allowed particularly when the course has available only a limited number of carts for single players.

How do I sign up? Where can I get information about the current event?

Members will receive notice via email at least 3 weeks prior to each scheduled event.  The email will contain a link to the sign up page that has all of the specific information about the event.  You may follow that link to read the details of the event with or without actually signing up.

Is there a deadline for signing up?

The deadline for signing up will be posted in the email and on the sign up page. Usually the week before the event is too late to sign up.  Some events will have an upper limit on the number of players, so the effective deadline may be earlier in which case a waiting list will be created.

How do I know I am registered for the tournament?

Once you have completed and submitted the sign up form, you will receive confirmation that the form has been received.   Two (2) weeks or so prior to the event an email will list players who have signed up.  However, you are not fully registered until your payment has been received.  See the Payments FAQs on this page.

What if I am a member and didn't receive the email notice to sign up?

If the previous tournament has been completed and the usual time for the commencement of sign ups for an upcoming event has passed, please check to see if the message is in your trash or spam folder.  If not, please contact Gary Palmer gary.palmer31@gmail.com  ),  Away Tournament Director, so that he can determine if there is an error in the email list.

Formats & Scoring

What scorecards will be used and how should they be submitted?

You will be using either the course scorecard or a custom scorecard produced for the round.  Turn in marked and attested cards  before leaving the course as instructed.

What formats are used?

We use individual stroke play for our tournaments.  Handicaps are used to compute the net strokes on each hole, with a maximum allowed of a net double bogey.  Stableford scoring has been scrapped in 2023 in favor of straight net stroke scoring.

Must I have a current index or handicap to play?

You need  a GHIN index only if you wish to be eligible for prizes based on net scoring.  You may participate in the event, but not in the net competition, without a current index or handicap.

Do I post my score or does the  club do that for me?

The club will post your tournament score.  For Away Tournaments we use the Golf Genius software to determine flights, pairings and scoring.  It automatically adjusts your score, limiting the maximum gross score (net double bogey) on each hole, and posts that score.

Prizes

What are the prizes?

The lowest Net scores are awarded small monetary prizes.  When Closest to the Pin is included, there are small monetary awards for that, no index or handicap is needed.  Sometimes low gross will receive a small prize and no index is needed for that prize.

In events where guests are allowed, can a guest win a prize?

Prizes are strictly reserved for members.

Payments & Refunds

What does my payment cover?

The sign up sheet will indicate what is covered.  Usually it will be green fees and cart fees, though some events will have separate fees for walkers.  Some courses will include free range balls.

When is my payment due and how do I submit it?

You are expected to pay within 3 days of signing up and no later than the sign up deadline for sign ups close to that date.  You are not considered registered until your payment is received.

We prefer that you use an electronic method to send your payment

You may also send a check made out to

Treasurer, Tilden Seniors GC, 1120 Hearst Ave. Apt. 1B, Berkeley, CA 94702

How do I cancel and can I receive a refund?

To cancel you need to contact Gary Palmer directly by email (gary.palmer31@gmail.com ). If you cancel prior to the deadline to sign up, you will receive a refund. Cancellations after the sign up deadline are not guaranteed, though we do our best to provide a refund and understand that seniors have issues that arise at the last minute that prevent them from playing.

However, once we have paid the course, we cannot issue a refund.  Courses vary in how strict they are regarding payments to them. On the day of the event you can always call the course and that may still allow for a refund.

Flights, Playing Partners, & Tee Times

Are there different flights and am I allowed to select the one I want?

In 2023 we have changed the method of determining flights.  Where before we had men 200+, Men 200 and Women, we now are gender-neutral and divide the field into 3 groups by handicap index.  Players no longer choose their flight.  Players with the lowest handicaps go off in the Championship Flight, next third in Flight 1 and last third in Flight 2.  Competition is between players in the same flight, and prizes are awarded for all three flights.  Players can now choose their tees, however, which affects their playing handicap for the round but not their flight.   The sign up form will allow a player to indicate tee they choose.

Can I select who I want to be in my foursome?

On the sign up sheet there is a space for you to list who you would like in your foursome.  Some players routinely ask to be together but  sometimes some of those named haven’t signed up and sometimes they make up a 5-some (not a possibility).  So if you request to play with someone but they haven't signed up by the time the pairings are made, then they will not be included in the pairings and if they sign up later it may be difficult to include them in your group.  We try to honor your request but we can’t always make it work.  Some players like to mix it up and for new players it provides an opportunity to expand their friendships.  Our advice is to limit the number of players you request to play with or to get on the horn and spur your friends to sign up asap.

Can I select my tee time (excluding shotgun starts)?

When everyone starts on the 1st tee it is not always possible to honor requests for specific tee times, especially when everyone wants the earliest possible times.  Some courses have 10 minute tee times and some have up to 15 minutes, which provides only 4-6 foursomes in a given hour.  So if you have a special need for a specific range of times, please use the Comment item on the sign up form to indicate it.

Away Tournament Trophy

How do I qualify for this?

There are three Away Tournament Champions crowned each year, one for each flight, Championship, Flight 1 and Flight 2.  The champions are determined by their combined net scores earned from each player's best six (of the nine total) away tournaments during the year.  Only TPSGC members are eligible.
