To provide a general idea of the starship support services that might be available on any particular world the following simple system is offered. The system is admittedly rather broad so as to encourage creativity and not unduly burden GMs by imposing features that are difficult to explain given local particulars.
Starports come in three “grades”; basic, average and advanced.
Basic – The ‘port provides landing areas, parking pads and basic navigation systems. Fuel and maintenance may or may not be provided. Ground staff for the starport tends to be limited.
Average – In addition to the features of a Basic ‘port, an Average ‘port includes fuel and maintenance facilitates as well as supporting structures for passengers, cargo and administration. ‘Ports on Stellar and Interstellar tech level worlds will have overhaul facilities about 50% of the time. Average starports are better staffed than Basic ones and usually have personnel present around the clock, if only at a minimal level. Security and emergency response personnel are a common feature of such ‘ports.
Advanced – An Advanced starport will have all of the features of an Average ‘port as well as overhaul facilities on worlds with Stellar or Interstellar tech levels. Shipyards may be present on more populous worlds. Advanced ‘ports tend to be well staffed at all hours of what passes for the local day.
Note that this system is intended primarily for commercial starports. Military and governmental ‘ports may share the same features but have a wider range of exceptional cases when it comes to the details.
