The gremlin is a classic example of what can happen when an animal is removed from its native habitat. Early explorers of the equatorial jungles of Khao Thap were quite taken by the furry one-quarter meter tall standard omnivore. Gremlins became well known for their intelligence and curiosity. (Both of which are critical survival traits in its highly competitive home environment). A market for gremlins as pets quickly developed, despite the objections of many scouts and scientists. Without their natural predators to keep them in check, the gremlins bred at an alarming rate. What’s more, they proved very difficult to contain, easily defeating simple cages and locks. Eventually some found their way aboard starships and spread across the Thousand Suns.
Gremlins are a continuing nuisance on many worlds, going anywhere they can in search of food and a place to nest. They have been particularly problematic aboard large vehicles and starships where they have a tendency to get “into the works” damaging circuitry and chewing through optics and fluid lines.
