Go left and follow the track through the woods and you will come to the M876 motorway, go left through a self closing gate and follow the path down the side of the field (M876 on right). Once at the bottom of the path go left and follow the disused railway path past J. C. Timber Mouldings until you come to a Y junction, go left, sign posted Herbertshire playing fields. LONG WALK :- MUSSELBURGH To LEITH.

DATE of WALK :- 6/03/2020

LENGTH of WALK :- 7.3 miles linear C

TERRAIN :- footpaths, woodland paths, riverbanks and promenade.

VERY MUDDY IN PLACES — BOOTS RECOMMENDED.

MAINLY FLAT WALKING, ONE FLIGHT OF STEEP STEPS.

The walk starts at Queen Margaret University where there are toilet facilities and a cafe for carry-out coffee.

We cross the railway bridge and take a path to the left which runs parallel to the railway. At a path junction we take the path to the left leading to industrial units and emerge onto the main Musselburgh road. After carefully crossing the road we go through the ornamental gates to Newhailes.

The route continues past Newhailes House then follows a footpath into trees heading for the shell grotto. We exit the estate grounds at the Brunstane entrance and follow the riverside path to Brunstane station. On reaching the quiet Brunstane Road South we turn right , pass the cul-de-sac of Daiches Braes and follow the next street on the right to reach the main road. We use the handy traffic island to carefully cross and go into Joppa Quarry Park (muddy!) The exit is beyond the play area and the route continues across a railway bridge where we go left and walk until we come to Brunstane Road.

After a short distance we cross and continue along the curvaceous Argyll Crescent. At the end we follow Hope Lane North then take ‘ The Christian Path’ and exit on to Brighton Place. We then head for Rosefield Park and exit by the play area.

At Portobello High Street we turn left and take the third street on the right which takes us to the promenade.

At the end of the long promenade we take a footpath on the right (very muddy !) which eventually emerges at a level crossing. We cross the main road at the pedestrian lights and head for steep steps on to a disused railway line. The disused line is followed all the way to Leith Links. We exit the Links at the far end of the sports area.

Now we cross at the traffic island at John’s Place, go along Queen Charlotte Street, cross Constitution Street and follow cobbles to reach a play area. We bear right in front of the play area into Water Street where we see Lamb’s House which is the oldest building in Leith. Burgess Street takes us down to the river where the walk ends.
