In addition to my featured lessons I have also included other hands on learning activities that I have captured whilst on practicum.
During phase 2 of my fourth year practicum we had been exploring two dimensional shapes. As a whole class exploration we created shape monsters. The teacher aide and myself confrenced with each student and recorded how many of each shape they had used to make their monster.
As a maths rotation activity each group were given an assortment of shapes that when put together correctly woud make either a train, boat, house or a sun. Once each group had worked together to make the object they then drew other objects using two dimensional shapes on whiteboards.
As a literacy rotation activity I made a fishing for sight words game. Students used magnetic fishing rods to catch a fish. Once they had caught a fish they then had to turn it over, say the sight word, then find it on their recording sheet and trace over it. As the class had not yet begun their learning of letter formation I chose to include the dotted font to assist students in writing the sight words. To differentiate this in the future I could remove the dotted font to extend students or use normal font for students to colour the word when found.
For maths rotations I planned four activities to rotate around based on students learning of directly and indirectly measuring and using informal measurements. Activity 1 saw students cutting pieces of paper into two pieces so that one piece was shorter or longer than the other piece, to get students directly comparing. Activity 2 saw students sequencing pre-cut straws from shortest to longest, to again reinforce directly comparing objects. Activity 3 saw students moving around 4 stations on the floor measuring each other, their feet and a line using cubes and another line using paper clips.. Activity 4 was an indipendent activity where students measured objects around them using bears, cubes and chain links. .

During my weekly visits to my prep class I have been planning maths rotation activities. The teacher had suggested I organise some patterning activities as students were still struggling with this concept. Activity 1 saw students playing a game called 'Spin a Pattern', students spun the spinner, made the pattern, recorded the pattern and named it. Activity 2 saw students working in pairs with 10 pattern cards. They worked together to decide which card was a pattern and which card wasn't a pattern. Activity 3 saw students working with fruit loops to make AB, ABC, ABB and AABB patterns.
This activity was completed whilst on my third year practicum in year 2. Using the book 'The Tiny Seed' by Eric Carle I read the story to the students without showing them any of the illustrations. Prior to reading the story I asked the students to close their eyes and just listen to the story. When I had finished reading the book students were then gievn a piece of paper and oil pastels. Students were asked to pick a part of the story they liked and draw what they saw.
