September 10, 2012, Totolan Dauis - The Tagbilaran City Host Lions Club Sight for Kids project chairman Arman Maranga led the sight screening of the Grade 4 to 6 students of the Totolan Dauis Elementary school. Assisting him were Lions Priscilla Richards and club president Ammon Tirol. The lower grade level students are scheduled another day considering the tight school schedule. Last month, the Lions club have visited three public elementary schools around Tagbilaran City and eighteen (18) students were found to have eye refraction errors. Most of these students were from the higher grade levels (grades 4 to 6) and three of them were already re-screened by optometrist Dr. Joy Bullecer and fitted with eyeglasses.
The Lions International initiative of Sight for Kids is a free service conducted by Lions Club to detect eye disorders among children. An estimated 1.4 million children in the world are blind with three-quarters of them from the poorest regions of Asia and Africa because of limited access to treatment for often easily-treatable conditions. Half of all cases of refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) in the world remain undetected and untreated. These easily-correctable disorders are the leading cause of blindness in children.
