In a spirit of compassion and service, the Tagbilaran City “Host” Lions Club conducted a relief assistance distribution for 170 households in Mahanay Island, Getafe, Bohol on December 3, 2025. The activity was carried out in response to the lingering effects of Typhoon Tino, which struck Central Visayas on November 4, 2025 and severely disrupted the fishing activities and daily livelihood of the island’s fisherfolk.
Although weeks had passed since the typhoon, many families in Mahanay Island continued to struggle. Damaged boats and fishing gear, coupled with unstable sea conditions, left fisherfolk with limited means to earn a living. Recognizing this continuing hardship, the Tagbilaran City Host Lions Club extended much-needed assistance, offering both practical support and encouragement to the affected community.
Each beneficiary household received a relief pack consisting of a plastic pail, 3 kilos of rice, canned goods, instant noodles, basic medicines, laundry soap, coffee, and sugar. Beyond their immediate practical value, the relief packs also served as advance Christmas gifts, bringing a sense of hope and warmth to families preparing for the holiday season amid difficult circumstances.
The successful implementation of the activity was made possible through the support of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Getafe, which generously provided a truck to transport the relief goods from Tagbilaran City to Getafe and a boat to ferry the Lions and volunteers to Mahanay Island. This collaboration exemplified the strength of partnership between civic organizations and local government in addressing community needs.
The relief distribution formed part of the Tagbilaran Lions Club’s annual “Bundle of Joy” year-end service activity—an enduring tradition that reflects the club’s unwavering commitment to service. This initiative has been consistently carried out throughout the 75 years of the club’s existence, since it was chartered on August 5, 1950.
True to the Lions’ guiding principle of “We Serve,” the Tagbilaran City Host Lions Club continues to stand with communities in times of need, offering not only material aid but also solidarity, compassion, and hope—especially to those whose livelihoods depend on the sea.
Lions Clubs Extend Hope to Young Learners of Mahanay Island with School Supplies and Feeding Program
Following the successful distribution of relief assistance to affected households, the Lions Clubs continued their humanitarian mission by bringing smiles and renewed hope to the children of Mahanay Island through the donation of much-needed school supplies and a simple feeding activity.
Understanding that education is among the first casualties when families are struck by disaster, the Lions organized a special activity focused on schoolchildren, particularly those in the primary grades. Each child received a set of school supplies that included crayons, writing pads, pencils, bond papers, and umbrellas—items essential for daily learning and protection from the elements as they travel to and from school.
The activity went beyond material support. To further care for the well-being of the pupils, the Lions also conducted a feeding program for children in Grades 1 to 3 during the distribution. The young learners were served slices of loaf bread paired with warm monggo porridge, providing them with nourishment and comfort as they gathered to receive their school items.
Teachers and parents expressed their gratitude for the initiative, noting that the assistance eased the burden on families still recovering from the impact of the recent typhoon. More importantly, the effort helped ensure that children could return to school equipped, motivated, and encouraged despite the challenges they and their families continue to face.
Through this school supplies donation and feeding activity, the Lions once again demonstrated their commitment to serving the community—not only by responding to immediate needs but also by investing in the education, health, and future of the next generation. The initiative served as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference in the lives of children striving to learn against the odds.
