ALL HONOR TO HIS NAME
Brother Silverman began his leadership service as Consul of his chapter. Upon graduation he attended U.S. Army OCS and served as a Forward Air Observer in the Viet Nam conflict. He then continued his service as a member of the Intelligence Branch in the Naval Reserves, wearing his Army wings on his Navy uniform. Upon moving east, he soon undertook the role of Chapter Advisor to Gamma Chi (University of Maryland). He earned his JD degree at night from the George Mason School of Law in 1978 and ultimately was admitted to practice into the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, the Virginia Supreme Court, and U.S. Court of Military Appeals. In 1979, then Grand Consul Bash appointed Brother Silverman to fill an unexpired term as Grand Praetor of the Eastern Province, a position he held for 24 years, at that time holding the modern record for length of service as a Grand Praetor. His Grand Chapter East province conferences were a model for their comprehensive content. He was inducted into our order at the earliest moment of eligibility. Harv was integral in the establishment of Iota Xi (George Mason) and its house corporation, and to the establishment of chapters at James Madison, Bishops, Fairleigh Dickenson, Towson, American and Rutgers. Harv, ever one to serve, then undertook the duties of a Grand Trustee, serving two terms, from 2003 to 2015. He significantly contributed to the first model By-Laws and legal checklist for house corporations, and was appointed Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee for a time. During that period, he served one term on the fraternity’s Executive Committee. Harv exhibited an unmatched zeal for all things Sigma Chi as shown by 40+ years of facilitation at our BLTW where he led and was a principal singer in the “Singing Sigs.”
Harv entered the Chapter Eternal on Saturday January 2nd, 2021. He is survived by wife Peggy,
daughter Melissa Lee, and Sigma Chi son Todd (George Mason). The family can be reached at: 11309
Fawn Lake Parkway, Spotsylvania, VA 22551.
Brother Silverman made a lifelong commitment of true service to our beloved Fraternity, and proudly
wore the White Cross in a manner our Seven Founders would commend.
In hoc,
Bob Jones, Order of Constantine ‘93
65th Grand Consul
