Model

Last updated: 16 July 2003

Since writing the notes below I have started to experiment with DCC in O gauge using ZTC Controls equipment. I plan to introduce DCC into 3mm as well. This will remove the electrical complications implied by the notes below. This will not resolve the questions raised concerning the prototypical operation of Swanage but it should make anything possible on the model.

These notes are based on a study of Train Working published on this site together with some intuition and the need to use the model to store and demonstrate visiting stock. I would welcome further input on these or any other comments. Please send comments to John Walker (see bottom of page).

Requirements in main platform

    1. isolate loco(s) of incoming train

    2. detach pilot loco from incoming train

    3. What is the format for incoming trains with pilot loco?

    4. If the train loco is on the front (Swanage end) then the pilot is probably on the front of that.

    5. Where is the pilot loco for a pushpull with loco at the back (Wareham end)?

    6. Where is the pilot loco for a pushpull with loco in the middle between pushpull coaches at the front and attached coaches at the back?

    7. remove stock from isolated loco(s)

    8. isolate loco of outgoing train

    9. couple pilot loco to outgoing train loco

    10. Outgoing coaches are likely to be backed up to the stops or stopped short of the crossover where the incoming loco uncoupled to run round.

    11. This means that the position of the front of the train on to which the pilot must be coupled will depend on the length of the train.

    12. It is not sensible to provide electrical breaks to meet every eventuality so may be compromise on the two baseboard joins as breaks giving train lengths of 3 and 7 coaches with a further break beyond the slip for a 10 coach train?

This will require the incoming train to be stopped such that the outgoing train engine will be just short of a break.

Requirements for bay platform

    1. isolate loco(s) of incoming train

    2. detach incoming train from pilot loco

    3. remove stock from isolated loco(s)

    4. isolate loco of outgoing train

    5. couple pilot loco to outgoing train loco

Other requirements

    1. isolate loco in shed, on turntable, at coaling stage

    2. isolate loco in yard (sidings 2/3/4/5/6) - one loco per siding + headshunt?
