The Ste. Elizabeth Church building is on the path to reparation after falling upon hard times over the past number of years. Until recently, the Church building has been owned by private interests. The Church had been closed and sold.
Earlier this year a group of former parishioners had the opportunity to purchase the Church and the land it sits on. This past Saturday, September 7, a number of those individuals attended a work bee to give the Church building an initial cleaning and to remove debris from the Church and the premises.
Marcel Collette of St. Malo is one of the principals involved in purchasing the Church and carrying out repairs to the building. The bell tower louvers have already been repaired and the bell has been returned to its proper station in the tower.
Mr. Collette says it is not the original bell, but rather the one which replaced the bell lost in the fire of May 1, 1951. The first Church built in 1903 was completely destroyed in the fire. It was replaced with the present cement block building.
Mr. Collette says definite plans have not been made as to the extent of repairs and restoration, but he thinks the Church may become a focal point for reunions and other similar events.
A Ste. Elizabeth Historical Committee has been established: Gabriel Collette of St. Malo is the President.
