For those that passed by Ste. Elizabeth this passed winter, you may have noticed that we had to board up the doors to avoid further damage caused by vandalism.
Sadly, this damage was done Saturday, July 2 at approx. 5 pm whereby all of the statues were broken to pieces and a bench was dropped from the top floor, over the railing. Fortunately, for us, someone else was visiting so the witness contacted RCMP immediately & took down plate #. Thanks to good investigating, RCMP apprehended the person, who then spent the night in custody. They also pressed charges therefore this person will have to answer in court sometime this fall.
Do come in!
This little church in the prairies is being visited on a regular basis which is good, and again, 99% of people visiting are respectful. Last year, a "want-to-be You Tuber" made a video and posted it as being a haunted church and posted several stories about our cemetery. You can put a spin on any story, but it doesn’t make it true! He did not have permission to do so but felt that, since the door wasn’t locked, that gave him the right to post anything he wanted. Since then, we are having all kinds of people at all hours of the night. Again, everyone is welcomed to visit during the day but there is really no need to be there after dark as we have no power and no lighting and would not want anyone to get hurt. Do come in but, please be respectul of this church.
Thank You - Merci for all of your generous donations!
Because of you we were able to get the roof repaired (damaged sheet metal replaced and an existing leak close to the steeple was also fixed). We then had the roofer secure the entire roof with longer screws as preventative maintenance against future winds.
The cross was also secured back to it's proper position on June 16, 2023. A big thank you to Charlie Parent & grandson, who donated their time and use of Charlie's crane/truck and also Gabriel Collette who masterminded and implemented the process. We are very fortunate to have amazing people on our side!
Roof Repair Fund
Fierce winds this past Spring caused substantial damage to the church roof and cross, as you can see in the pictures below. We must replace approximately 10 sheets of steel on the roof and the cross on the top of the steeple must be secured back to it's upright position. These repairs are scheduled to get done this Fall, 2022. The cost to repair the roof alone will be in excess of $10,000.00.
The R.M. of Montcalm has volunteered to help us with income tax donation receipts for those who wish to donate to help recover some of these costs.
To donate please do the following:
Write cheque payable to the RM of Montcalm and write in the memo area C/O Ste. Elizabeth Historical Committe - Roof Repair Fund (Please note that the RM of Montcalm does not accept etransfers.)
Mail cheque to our treasurer, Norbert Collette, at his home address which is 211 Penfold Crescent, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2J 1S3. Please make sure that your return address is current.
A donation tax receipt from the RM of Montcalm will then be sent to you by mail.
If you have questions, do not hesitate to call Norbert Collette at (204) 291-4681.
We are planning on resuming our annual picnic next year so in the meantime, please take care & stay healthy so we can meet again.
Thank you in advance.
Gaby Collette, President
Ste. Elizabeth Historical Committee
Fierce winds went through Ste. Elizabeth early May/2022 causing damage to the roof.
The cross also toppled over due to the winds.
A new cement platform was added in the cemetary in 2021 to accommodate 22 headstones.
