Garfield "Gar" Arthur Wood was inventor, entrepreneur and motorboat builder. He broke water speed records many times and he was the first man to travel over 100 miles per hour on water.

He started his racing career buying boat named Miss Detroit. Later he had many boats named Miss Detoit and won with them four times APBA Challenge Cup (Gold Cup) four times. In 1920 he started to race on new boat named Miss America and broke with this speed record on the water six times, raising it in 1932 to 124.860 mph (200.9 km/h). These times power boating was popular with almost million spectators in Detroit race.
