Waterjet

A jetsprint course consists of a series of channels 3 to 5 metres in width, with a water depth up to 1 metre.

Boats have a two-person crew, driver and navigator, and run individually against the clock through the channels in a predetermined order.

The minimum age for drivers is 18 years for Superboats, and 16 years for Group A. Navigators must be 16 years of age.

Competitors have a diagrammatic directional map similar to the one shown here. Prior to racing they are required to walk the perimeter of the track to study and memorise the layout that will have 25 to 30 directional changes in a run that takes 45 to 65 seconds to complete.

The navigator indicates the next change in direction by hand signals.

Each competitor has three qualifying runs, with the fastest 16 in each class progressing to the elimination rounds that are raced on the "sudden-death" principle. The field is halved in each round, reducing from 16 to 8 to 4, down to the two crews that contest the Final.
