My wife, Barb Hayes, is a retired physical therapist who volunteers as a docent at Cranbrook House & Gardens and sails on Kent Lake. She competed with the Michigan Synchro Masters, and was on the team that won a gold medal at the 2015 U.S. Masters Synchronized Swimming Championships . She also enjoys reading, knitting, gardening, tennis, travel, and genealogy.
I have twin daughters, Kathy and Tracy. They graduated from Michigan State University in 2009.
Kathy's job is Group Communications Director, Social in Los Angeles, California. She sang with Jake Armerding and Mark Erelli (Compass and Companion and Pilgrim Highway) in my home and at the Ark in Ann Arbor (Ithaca), and with Ari Hest at her sister Tracy's wedding in Santa Barbara (Cranberry Lake).
Tracy Kahlscheuer is an interior designer and mother in Santa Barbara, California. She sang with Ari Hest in my home (Cranberry Lake). Her husband, Matt Kahlscheuer, is Senior Director of Apeel Labs at Apeel. Ari Hest performed the song, I've Got You, at their wedding. Their son Julian was born in November 2019, and their son Noah was born in February 2022.
My son Roger is a teacher in Bethesda, MD, a high school assistant basketball coach in Washington, DC, and a basketball trainer. He is a former DC Teaching Fellow and a former AAU basketball coach, Roger wrote this story about teaching in DC. He previously was Prep Sports Editor at the Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, TN, where he wrote this story about Albert Pujols. Roger graduated from Kalamazoo College in 2007, where he played on the basketball and baseball teams, and was editor of the newspaper. He sang with Mark Erelli in my home (Pilgrim Highway). His wife, Cristi Garfield, is a speech pathologist and mother. They live in Silver Spring, MD. Their daughter Sommer was born in March 2020 and their son Kieran was born in November 2021.
My brother David is an outstanding keyboard musician. He has been the musical director for George Benson, and has performed with many great musicians including Smokey Robinson, Freddie Hubbard, and Natalie Cole. He wrote several books on keyboards.
My sister Joan is a retired professor at the University of Minnesota and is a leader in improving student learning of statistics. She has published multiple books.
My sister, Ann Olszewski, is a retired preservation librarian who worked at the Cleveland Public Library. She co-wrote Volumes II and III of a book on music, edited a book on flowers, wrote an article, and won an award.
My mom, Amy Garfield, a teacher, reading specialist, and RIF volunteer, was born on June 13, 1922 and died on May 5, 2013. She won the 1998 Reading is Fundamental Volunteer of the Year Award.
My dad, Sol L. Garfield, a leader in the field of clinical psychology, was born on January 8, 1918 and died on August 14, 2004. His colleague Allen Bergin wrote, "He was one of the preeminent clinical psychologists of the 20th century" and "He stood out as a consistent advocate of scientific evidence in service to psychotherapeutic practice." His papers are at the Archives of the History of American Psychology at the University of Akron. Many of his books are still available. He won theĀ American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge in 1979.
