Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh GCVO, GCStJ, CD 

The Colonel-in-Chief is traditionally the royal patron of a regiment and while not an operational appointment, the role is one centered on fidelity and tradition.

The Regimental Foundation approached the Royal Household in 2005 requesting that consideration be made for Her Royal Highness The Princess Edward, Countess of Wessex, GCVO, CD to accept this appointment. The Foundation was delighted when HRH indicated that she would be honoured to assume this role and, on 20th March 2006, HRH was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the South Alberta Light Horse by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. The Regiment had the privilege of hosting HRH at Canmore, Alberta in June 2006, where she was presented with the Regimental brooch. Subsequently, the Regiment commissioned a portrait of HRH which now hangs in the Officers Mess at Jefferson Armoury in Edmonton. HRH maintains close ties with Her Regiment and has since visited Alberta in 2009 and 2016
