The South Alberta Light Horse
The South Alberta Light Horse (SALH) is a Primary Reserve Armoured Reconnaissance unit of the Canadian Forces. The Regiment forms part of 3rd Canadian Division’s, 41 Canadian Brigade Group (Alberta). As a Primary Reserve unit, service is purely voluntary on a part-time basis, but soldiers may also volunteer for full-time employment in the Canadian Forces. The majority of the Regiment's soldiers have full-time careers in a diverse range of civilian occupations or are full-time students.
The Regiment has squadrons based at Lt-Col M.E. Patterson Armoury in Medicine Hat (A Squadron) and at Brigadier James Curry Jefferson Building in Edmonton (B Squadron). Vimy Ridge Armoury in Lethbridge is the home of 3 Troop of A Squadron.
The South Alberta Light Horse trains at troop and squadron levels in order to be prepared to support domestic and international operations. Soldiers of the Regiment have participated in domestic operations that range from fighting forest fires to floods and many have deployed on in NATO and UN operations across the globe.
SALH soldiers train in both dismounted and mounted reconnaissance operations and take specialty courses on advanced communications, nuclear, chemical and biological defence. When called upon to augment the Regular Force Army SALH crewmen completed advanced qualification courses for the Light Armoured Vehicle III (LAV III) and Leopard II - Main Battle Tank.
The Regiment is garrisoned in three armouries across the province. Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron are in Medicine Hat and Edmonton; ‘A’ Squadron is garrisoned in Medicine Hat at Lt-Col M.E. Patterson Armoury with 3 Troop in Lethbridge at Vimy Armoury and ‘B’ Squadron at Brigadier James Curry Jefferson Building in Edmonton.
The Regiment trains year-round in all three cities and across Alberta for operations that may be assigned to the Canadian Armed Forces.
