Headphones

I have been listening to music for many years. I have broken a multitude of headphones. However my Sennheiser 424 headphones bought about 30 years ago are still alive and well. I have now purchased a set of open Circumaural headphones (The Audio-Technica ATH-AD700).

I like many music styles .... in particular guitar music but I can easily listen to classical music.

My favourite bands: Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Preist, Dreamtheater and many others.

Love Guitarists like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van halen, Zakk Wylde , Kirk Hammitt and many others.

Love the sound of Isao Tomita and Vangelis ....

so much music , so much talent....

One of many problem when buying a pair of headphones is the ability to test before you buy ....even if you do test the headphones they may not have been burnt in. Headphones usually sound better after many hours of listening. Headphones can cost a few £s but some of the high end headphones can set you back £1000 or more.

Sennheiser HD 800 Dynamic Stereo Open Headphones is one of many expensive cans...these headphones selling currently close to £1000

There are many different headphones types.

Closed headphones which are meant to shield the listener from external noise. These also protect other people (particularly on public transport) from hearing what you are hearing. Sound reflection within the closed headphones can sometimes affect the quality of the audio.

The sony MDR v6 are closed circumaural headphones.

Open Headphones have no restrictions and probably the best but you can hear some external sounds ....again a matter of taste. Open headphones tend to have grills. This allows sound in and out so you can hear what is happening if you are not playing audio too loudly.

Circumaural headphones have ear cups which cover the ear totally. This tends to make the earphone comfortable.

Circumaural headphones can be closed or open type headphones. If you plan to use on public transport I would choose closed variety as the open type can be very noisy to anyone close by.

The Seennheiser HD650 are open Circumaural headphones

Supra-aural sit directly on the ear but does not completely cover over the ear.

Many of Grado's headphones are supra-aural.
