The English Language Department at Sos Baynat Secondary School has always been interested in exploring socio-cultural themes in the students’curriculum. That was the initiative for the Culture Calendar activity, which was started about five years ago. Students and teachers had to agree about the most important events for each day of the month: deaths, birthdays, important people’s relevant achievements, remarkable days. Once all these items were discussed, approximately six were chosen to appear in a poster and a photo was essential to emphasize their importance.
Students with the teachers’ help would create that poster for the English Language Department main entrance, as well as the major entries for each day of the month. Obviously all our students had to know about these events and the best way to spread out this knowledge was to speak about them in class. The Culture Calendar activity had begun and our aim was soon accomplished.
When the Arce Project started at the beginning of the school year 2010-11, the teachers of English, Mercedes González Peris and Inmaculada Chiva decided to participate in the project. The idea was to introduce Don Vicente Sos Baynat in our Culture Calendar. Teachers and students could have easily found out about Don Vicente’s life and translated it; however a problem arose, we didn’t know specific days in his biography, in this way Don Alejandro Sos Baynat was very helpful sending us the necessary information for the Calendar.
Now students and teachers only had to translate Don Vicente’s biography and add it to the Calendar. As soon as the translation had been finished, the next step was to make posters again but now with Don Vicente as a main character. In March the first poster and entries about his life appeared, students had started to speak about Don Vicente in English. Since then, a new poster and new facts about his life have come out and more and more students in our secondary school have known about Don Vicente Sos Baynat.
Essentially, we expect to promote Don Vicente’s life and his contribution to society throughout this activity and we hope we get it with our last poster in June.
