Thomas Zuraw (later Zuraff) came from "Camin" in that part of Prussia which is today Poland.

More specifically, Thomas came from Kamin, West Prussia, which is today Kamień Krajeński, Poland, and not Kamień Pomorski, which was the placed previously inferred to be "Camin" by researchers.

Thomas Zuraw and his family arrived at the port of New York on board the Prussian brig Europa (Captain H. Ehrhardt) near the end of June 1854. According to the "Datum des Abgangs" (date of departure) in the Hamburg Passenger Lists, they had departed from Hamburg on May 3.

[NOTE: The Prussian Brig Europa should not be confused with the Bremen ship Europa, which also arrived in New York in latter part of June 1854.

The Zuraw family appears on Image 95.

The date of the passenger list was July 3rd, 1854, although it is clear from the newspaper announcements that the Europa had already arrived at the port of New York by June 30th. (If we add 45 days to the May 3rd departure date, we get an arrival date of June 17th. Is that too early? Could the departure date be wrong?)

The actual number of passengers listed was 124, 11 of which were "Cabin Passengers", and the other 113, including the Zuraws, were "Between Deck". Included in the latter is a baby boy Johannes who was "born on the voyage".

According to the Europa's passenger list, the Zuraw family consisted of Thomas (age 39), Marian (Mary) (age 43), three boys--Johan (John) (age 13), Constantin (Constantine) (age 11), and Ignatz (age 2 mos) (actually his correct name was Cornelius)--and two girls--Agnes (age 7) and Anna (age 5). Thomas' occupation was listed as mechanic rather than farmer.

By 1860 they were living in Union Grove Township, Whiteside County, Illinois, where the name was listed in the census as "Zerrof".

... Along in the spring (1836) Daniel B. Young came in. He was born Sept. 16, 1800, in New Jersey. He went from there to Ohio, and from Ohio he came to Union Grove. He remained for a while, looking around, and finally purchased Mr. Atkinson's claim on section 1, which consisted of 640 acres of land with improvements. After making some further preparations, he returned to Ohio for his family. In the fall he came back, bringing his family, and settled down on his purchase. The following year he planted the first crop of corn, wheat and potatoes.

Mr.Young married Betsey Jackson in 1824. They came to Union Grove with seven children. Five children were born to them in Union Grove. All are living except two, Tryphena and Abigail. Mrs. Young died Jan. 13, 1872. Mr. Young sold his farm to H. M. Teller, and is now living in Morrison.

The spelling of the surname eventually became standardized as "Zuraff", although variations would persist.

On 21 August 1861, Constantine "Zuraf" enlisted at the town of Bloomington in Company A of the 33rd Illinois Infantry. On 25 April 1862, Agnes gave birth to a daughter named Lucy Elizabeth Young. No marriage record for Agnes and any man named Young has been found. The family legend was that Lucy's father was an attorney. More recent research located Lucy's death certificate, which identified her father as Jackson Young. Also, the marriage record of Lucy E. Young to Bernhard Striegel on 4 March 1889 indicated that her father was Jackson Young. On 2 October 1865, Jackson Young married Lydia Lyman. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1867.

Although Constantine's older brother John never enlisted in the army, he eventually was required to register for the draft. U.S. Civil War draft registration records indicate that "John Zuraff" registered in June 1863. At that time he was listed as age 20 and unmarried. His indicated birthplace was Prussia, and his residence was Garden Plain, the township just west of Union Grove.

Apparently just over a year later the Zuraff family was in Buchanan County, Iowa, as indicated by the marriage there between Agnes Zuraff and Joseph Burke (Burchinsky) on 23 October 1864. [See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XVMT-RJK ]

Constantine died 15 February 1879 at age "37y 1m 14d" and was buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Fairbank, Iowa.

On 2 March 1865, the train on which the 33rd Illinois Infantry had been traveling derailed near Boutte Station, Louisiana, killing nine men and injuring another seventy-two.

Constantine received head injuries from which he never fully recovered.

The Chicago Tribune of 14 March 1865 printed an account of the accident given by Capt. Edward J. Lewis of Company C. It stated in part:

The Railroad Disaster to the 33d Illi-

nois Regiment.

Algiers, (Opposite New Orleans.) LA., }

March 2, 1865. }

Editors Chicago Tribune:

By request of the Colonel commanding, I

forward to you the following account of a

shocking railroad accident which befel the

33d Illinois (Normal) regiment to-day, result-

ing in the killing or disabling of a large num-

ber of the men.

The 33d has been for several months posted

as guards at a number of the principal stations

on the United States military railroad lead-

ing from this place to Brashear City. Having

been relieved from that duty by other troops,

and ordered to join Gen. A. J. Smith’s 16th

Corps near New Orleans, they took passage this

morning on tbc regular train for this place.

At a point about twenty-seven miles west of

Algiers, the locomotive ran over a horse, and

a number of the cars, some flat and some box

cars, in which the troops were riding, were

thrown from the track, smashed, and piled

together in frightful confusion, their frag-

ments intermingled with the killed and

wounded men. Nearly half of the train re-

mained on the track, and the officers and

men from these, with the undisabled men

from the wrecked cars, at once rushed to the

rescue of their comrades, and labored ener-

getically to extricate the wounded and the

bodies of the dead from the mass of wreck.

The severely Injured were conveyed to a

neighboring house, and promptly attended by

Drs. Rex and Antis, the regimental surgeons.

All that was possible was done for their relief

officers and men alike exerting themselves

with untiring assiduity while anything re-

mained to be done for their safety and com-

fort. The train from the East arrived at the

scene within half an hour after the accident,

and on this the regiment come on to this

place, bringing the wounded, who were at

once placed on a steamboat, and sent to an

hospital in the city, the regiment remaining

at the Algiers depot for the night.

The commissioned officers and citizen pas-

sengers being mostly in the hindmost car,

which remained on the track, escaped injury.

The only exceptions were Capt. Rosegrant

(commissioned recently and not yet muster

ed) and Lieut. Moore, both of Co. D, who were

on their company car, and were both hurt,

Capt. B. severely and Lieut. M. slightly.

Several of the rear cars, containing Cos. C. F,

I and K, and the two forward cars with Co.

B, as well as the locomotive itself, remained

on the track or were but little broken, and

from these companies few men were hurt

and these mainly in jumping from the train.

The cars containing Cos. A, D, E and G were

completely demolished, especially in the first

two named. Co. H was not on the train, the

accident having occurred before the arrival of

the train at their station.

The article of March 13th is of particular interest because it just happens to include a brief account of Constantine's ordeal:

March 3d., 10 A.M -- I have just heard from the hospital. Maj. Pope has visited the

wounded boys this morning, and reports all are doing well. He did not, however, find Zuraf

of A, who was one of the severely wounded. This young man lay for nearly an hour under

a pile of heavy trucks and rubbish, with as large force of men working at him who could get

to him, before he was extricated. Although thus held down, and considerably cut and

bruised, he seemed much less hurt when taken out than was suspected, and no bones

appeared to be broken. In his case as in others, however, some days may pass before the

full extent of his injuries will be manifested.

Zuraff.

Thomas Zuraff of Bennington town-

ship died this morning at 10:10 o'clock.

He was born in Germany eighty-eight

years ago, and came to America forty-

eight years ago, settling in Whiteside

county, Wis [sic-Ill.] , where he remained about

eighteen years. He then moved to Iowa,

settling on a farm in Buchanan county,

remaining there ten years. For the

past twenty years he has made his home

with his daughter, Mrs. A. J. Biller

of Bennington township. He was an

upright man and was thoroughly re-

spected by all his acquaintances.

The funeral will be held from St.

Joseph's church Saturday morning at 11

o'clock, Rev. Father Cooney officiating.

The remains will be laid to rest in the

Catholic cemetery beside his son in-law,

Mr. Biller, whose death occurred about

one year ago.

Mia Pankau

The silent film actress Mia Pankau was born on 14 February 1891 as Martha Elisabeth Pankau in Prussian Friedland (Schlochau in West Prussia, today Debrzno, Poland).

She was the daughter of master carpenter Albert Pankau († 1896) and his wife Anna (née Laschetzki, † 1895) and had seven siblings, three of whom had died in infancy.

Whether Mia Pankau grew up with relatives or in an orphanage after the early death of her parents remains unclear.

Her screen debut was in 1917 alongside Werner Krauss and Martha Orlanda in the silent melodrama "If women love and hate," at the same time the directing debut of the

Dutchman Jaap Speyer 1) (1891-1952), whose wife she should become later. Mia Pankau quickly became a silent movie star with supporting roles in other melodramatic

stories, usually standing in front of the camera for her husband. ...

Anton Pencek's age of 22 in 1847 calculates to his being born about 1825. No baptismal record or death record has been found for Anton Pencek.

Malwina's age of 24 in 1847 calculates to her being born about 1823, whereas Balbina was born 20 Mar 1818.

It is tentatively proposed that either Balbina Zoraw was nevertheless Malwina Zuraf, or that Adalbert Zoraw (aka Zuraf) and Eva Cizmowski

had an additional child named Malwina, born about 1823, whose baptism was not recorded.

No marriage record or death record has been found for Balbina.

But to add to the confusion, on 13 October 1874, John Penzek, the son of Anton Pencek and his Zuraf wife, married Juliana Wishnowska in St. Louis. In this marriage record John's mother was identified as Pauline Zuraf. The record, written in Latin, is partially excerpted here: "... Joannes Penscheck [son of] Antonie Penscheck and Pauline Zuraf [and] Juliana Wishnowska [daughter of] Vincentie Wischnowski and Marie Anne Kilonowicz ..."

Marianna Dziunarowska married Jacob Karowski on 13 January 1765 in Jeleńcz. Their son Simon was the father of Marianna Karowski who married Thomas Zoraw/Zuraw.

Marianna Dziunarowska appears to have been the youngest child of Michael Dziunarowski and his wife Catharina.

Note that there are three Mariannas listed below, one in 1722, one in 1739, and one in 1746. The one in 1746 fits with the death of Marianna Karowska in 1816 at age 70.

Johann Karowski and his family arrived at the port of New York on 19 July 1902 on board the ship Fürst Bismark.

John Karowsky died 16 May 1914 in Chicago, Illinois.

Franziska Chmiel, age 20, and Anastasia Chmiel, age 18, arrived at New York on 28 February 1901 on board the ship Frankfurt.

They were going to join a relative in "Pa" identified only as "br. i. l."

Presumably "br. i. l." stands for "brother-in-law", which suggests they had an unidentified married sister already living in Pennsylvania.

Maria Chmill, age 17, arrived at New York on 19 March 1902 on board the ship Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse.

She was going to join a relation identified as "E Hartmann (also intrepreted as Hatmann)" whose address was "Philadelphia, Natron Str. No 1536". [Presumably Natron was Natrona street.]

Was "E Hartmann" the brother-in-law whom Franziska and Anastasia had joined the previous year? If so, what was his wife's name?

A few years later Anastasia and Marie returned to Kamin to bring their younger sister Rosalia to America.

Marie Chmill, age 24; Anastasia Chmill, age 26; and Rosa Chmill, age 19, arrived at New York on 12 September 1908 on board the ship Hamburg.

They were going to join a friend identified as "Mr. Hohms" whose address was "941 W. 4 str. Philadelphia, Pa."

"Frances Chmill" married William H Kraemer on 8 August 1812 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to the marriage license, Frances Chmill was born in Germany on 5 March 1880.

"Anna Chmill" married Frank Ludtke on 12 November 1812 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to the marriage license, Anna Chmill was born in Germany on 15 March 1884.

NOTE: Based on the close proximity of their birth dates, it would appear that the Marianna Chmiel who was born in 1884; the Maria Chmill of age 17 who arrived in New York on 19 Mar 1902; the Marie Chmill of age 24 who arrived again on 12 Sept 1908; and the Anna Chmill who gave her birth date as 15 March 1884 on her marriage license with Frank Ludtke, all must be the one and the same individual.

Frances M Kraemer (i.e., Franziska Chmiel) died 24 Dec 1965 in Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania.

Johann (John) Penzek

Johann/John Penzek/Pencek was presumably the nephew of Thomas Zuraw.

Johann Penzeck emigrated to America in 1872 or 1873. (A Hamburg passenger list shows a Johann Penzeck, age 24, from Bromberg (Bydgoszcz), Prussia departing 9 Aug 1872.)

He settled in St. Louis, Missouri and lived there the rest of his life.

He married Juliana Wishnowska on 13 Oct 1874 in St. Louis. In 1900, Julia had eight of nine children living. In 1910, she had seven of nine children living.

John died 16 April 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri.

In the 1900 census, his indicated date of birth was July 1849. His death certificate indicated his age was 72y 9m 8d and his date of birth was July 8, 1850.

Some descendants of John Penzek and some descendants of Thomas Zuraw have had their autosomal DNA analyzed.

The Railroad Disaster to the 33d Illi-

nois Regiment.

Editors Chicago Tribune:

By request of the Colonel commanding, I

forward to you the following account of a

shocking railroad accident which befel the

33d Illinois (Normal) regiment to-day, result-

ing in the killing or disabling of a large num-

ber of the men.

The 33d has been for several months posted

as guards at a number of the principal stations

on the United States military railroad lead-

ing from this place to Brashear City. Having

been relieved from that duty by other troops,

and ordered to join Gen. A. J. Smith’s 16th

Corps near New Orleans, they took passage this

morning on tbc regular train for this place.

At a point about twenty-seven miles west of

Algiers, the locomotive ran over a horse, and

a number of the cars, some flat and some box

cars, in which the troops were riding, were

thrown from the track, smashed, and piled

together in frightful confusion, their frag-

ments intermingled with the killed and

wounded men. Nearly half of the train re-

mained on the track, and the officers and

men from these, with the undisabled men

from the wrecked cars, at once rushed to the

rescue of their comrades, and labored ener-

getically to extricate the wounded and the

bodies of the dead from the mass of wreck.

The severely Injured were conveyed to a

neighboring house, and promptly attended by

Drs. Rex and Antis, the regimental surgeons.

All that was possible was done for their relief

officers and men alike exerting themselves

with untiring assiduity while anything re-

mained to be done for their safety and com-

fort. The train from the East arrived at the

scene within half an hour after the accident,

and on this the regiment come on to this

place, bringing the wounded, who were at

once placed on a steamboat, and sent to an

hospital in the city, the regiment remaining

at the Algiers depot for the night.

The commissioned officers and citizen pas-

sengers being mostly in the hindmost car,

which remained on the track, escaped injury.

The only exceptions were Capt. Rosegrant

(commissioned recently and not yet muster

ed) and Lieut. Moore, both of Co. D, who were

on their company car, and were both hurt,

Capt. B. severely and Lieut. M. slightly.

Several of the rear cars, containing Cos. C. F,

I and K, and the two forward cars with Co.

B, as well as the locomotive itself, remained

on the track or were but little broken, and

from these companies few men were hurt

and these mainly in jumping from the train.

The cars containing Cos. A, D, E and G were

completely demolished, especially in the first

two named. Co. H was not on the train, the

accident having occurred before the arrival of

the train at their station.

I append a list of the killed and wounded,

made up by a careful and thorough examina-

[ti]on the train, and corrected by the company

commanders since our arrival at this place.

It may be relied on as substantially accurate

with these explanations : that of the men

here reported many will probably be fit for

duty in a few days; while on the other hand

I have not reported the almost numberless

cases of contusions and scratches more or

lees severe, which still leave the recipients

able for present duty. In the two companies

chiefly involved, very few men escaped en-

tirely unhurt.

It will be seen that my list embraces nine

killed and seventy-one wounded. The list of

dead includes all who are known to be dead

up to the present hour, 10 p. m.

Trivia Time

The real first Zuraf* to America

It had been my opinion that the family of Thomas Zuraw/Zuraff was the first of that or any similar name to come to North America. However, that is not the case.

There was a Nicolas Zuraf who served as a private in de Watteville's Regiment, a Swiss military unit in the employ of Great Britain. The regiment was sent to Canada in 1813, where it fought against the Americans during the War of 1812.

British records of Watteville's Regiment indicate that Nicolas was born between 1776 and 1780 in Lemberg, Poland. (Lemberg was the German name for the Polish city Lwow/Lwów, today Lviv in what is now western Ukraine.)

Nicolas had enlisted in the regiment in Spain on 28 August 1810. He served for 5 years and 261 days and was discharged in Canada. As a reward for his service, he was entitled to 100 acres of land in Canada. He was located on 9 Dec 1816 on the NE half of lot 6, concession 3, of Beckwith Township, in present-day Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada. After being absent from the lot for twelve months and having made no improvements, the lot was regranted to Robert Jackbury on 9 Sept 1818. Nothing further is known of Nicolas Zuraf. He probably returned to Europe.
