Armstrongs of the upper Bullpasture
The region of the upper Bullpasture River was a part of Augusta County until the early 1790s.
When Pendleton County was formally established on 1 May 1788, its southern boundary followed the divide between the waters of the South Branch of Potomac, which flowed northward, and the waters of the James, which flowed southward. This left the upper Bullpasture in Augusta County since the Bullpasture River was part of James River system. On 1 May 1791, Bath County was formally established. Its northern boundary began at the west corner Pendleton County, then ran to the top of the ridge which divided the the waters of the South Branch from those of Jackson's River, then in a straight line, crossing the Bullpasture, to the lower end of John Redman's plantation on the Cowpasture River. That part of Augusta County which lay on the headwaters of the Bullpasture and Cowpasture Rivers was added to Pendleton County.
Thus when searching personal property tax lists for individuals who lived in this area, it is necessary to search the Augusta County lists up through 1790 but then the Pendleton County lists from 1791 onwards.
The first Armstrong to settle in the upper Bullpasture area of Pendleton County (formerly Augusta County, and now present-day Highland County), Virginia was John Armstrong. He was followed a few years later by William Armstrong Senior and Junior.
The earliest record we have for John Armstrong is in 1783. In that year his name was listed in the "List of Taxable property in the Bounds of Captains Hicklins & Holes Companys", Augusta County. [Capt. Hole was actually Capt. Peter Hull.]

Bratton's and Brown's Companies; John Kinkead, in Capts. Hicklin's and Hole's Companies; George Poage, in Capts. Poage's and Hamilton's Companies.
Not every tax list was necessarily located and examined, but in 1785 his name appeared in the "List taken in Capt. Hicklins Compy. by John Kinkade Gent."
On 5 July 1787, John Armstrong purchased two tracts of 90 and 170 acres from John Jordan in what was still Augusta County. The personal property tax list for this area in 1791 were not found, but John Armstrong appears continuously in the annual personal property tax lists of Pendleton County beginning in 1792.
On 6 October 1794, William Armstrong Senior purchased 200 acres from Robert Duffield. The deed stated that William was of "Louden" (i.e., Loudoun) County, Virginia. A William Armstrong begins to appear in the personal property tax lists in 1795. For the years 1795 and 1796, only John Armstrong and William Armstrong are listed. In 1797, the other William Armstrong begins to appear. On 1 August 1797, William Armstrong received a grant for 80 acres. (The grant does not specify if this was William Senior or Junior.) From 1797 to 1804, these three Armstrongs appear in the tax records: John, William Sr., and William Jr. In the subsequent years, as the sons of these individuals grow to maturity, other Armstrongs appear.
The earliest records for William Armstrong Senior are in Loudoun County, Virginia. His name did not appear in the 1782 and 1883 personal property tax lists of Loudoun County. However, he was present by 14 August 1783 when his name appeared as a "road hand" in this Loudoun County road order:
Order Book H, 14 August 1783
[p. 116] Thomas GIBSON appt'd overseer of the road from the Wonkapin branch
to Little river at Mercer's Quarter with the following hands to work under
him – John Peyton HARRISON's, Leven POWELL's, William ARMSTRONG's, William
STEPHENSON's, John CRUPPER's, John DENNIS', Thomas SEALOCK's, Joseph
FARROW's, John WALKER's, John WOOD's, James SINKLER's, John PERRY's, James
MERCER's, Samuel HENDERSON's, and John HENDERSON's.
His name appeared again two months later in a related road order:
Order Book H, 17 October 1783
[p. 179] Ordered that the road from the Wonkapin branch to Little River be
divided into two districts and that Leven POWELL, Gent. be appt'd surveyor
thereof from the said branch to where Weedon's Mill road comes into the same
at the head of James SINCLAIR's Lane, with the following hands to work
thereon vizt. John Peyton HARRISON's, William ARMSTRONG's, William
STEVENSON's, John CRUPPER's, John DENNIS', and Thomas SEALOCK's.
Note: There is evidence to suggest that the William Stephenson/Stevenson whose name also appears in these road orders may have married William Armstrong Sr.'s daughter Jane.
The information given in these road orders makes it possible to estimate where in Loudoun County William Armstrong was living.
A modern map show U.S. Highway 50 (John Mosby Highway) running near the southern boundary of Loudoun County. North-flowing Wancopin Creek crosses the highway just east of the town of Middleburg. About five miles farther east, Little River crosses the highway just east of the town of Aldie. The area between Middleburg and Aldie includes the area where William Armstrong and William Stephenson were required to be "road hands" in 1783 and 1785, and so it is inferred they were residing in this vicinity.
William Armstrong Sr. is documented in the personal property tax lists of Loudoun County beginning in 1784. Three white males above the age of 21 are living in his household for 1784, 1785, and 1786. In 1787 and 1788 the three are identified as William Sr., William Jr., and James. (Beginning in 1788, the tax list consisted of white males above the age of 16 rather than 21.) It is significant to note that on 1 April 1788 in Augusta County, Virginia, William (Jr.) married Elizabeth Erwin, daughter of "Jarred who consents". The witnesses were John Armstrong and Andrew Jordan. John Armstrong was also the bondsman. Andrew Jordan was the son of the John Jordan who had sold two tracts of land to John Armstrong the previous year. Thus it would appear that William Jr., although still a resident of Loudoun County, made a trip to Augusta County in the spring of 1788 and returned with his bride to Loudoun County by May 30th, which was the date his name was returned on the 1788 tax list. Tradition and circumstantial evidence indicate that John Armstrong had married Agnes Erwin, another daughter of Jared Erwin, although their marriage record has not been found. Tradition and circumstantial evidence also indicate that John and William Jr. were brothers. So then, perhaps he played matchmaker for his brother William and his sister-in-law Elizabeth.
A connection if some sort between John Armstrong and Jared Erwin might be inferred from an abstracted 1790-1791 lawsuit in which both John and "Gavet" were listed as defendants:

Erwin--Augusta, 17th August, 1790.
Although the property tax lists indicate that John Armstrong was a resident of Augusta County since 1783 (and his name does not appear in any personal property tax records of Loudoun County), it would seem he must have traveled back and forth between Loudoun and Augusta for a time. The death record of John's son Jared, who died in Highland County in 1865 at age 80, says that he (Jared) was born in Leesburg in Loudoun County. If Jared was age 80 in 1865, then he was born in 1785. This information was provided by Jared's son Allen, with whom Jared and wife Agnes were living in the 1860 census.
In the 1789 Loudoun County personal property tax list, William Armstrong Jr. is listed separately, but James is stll living with William Sr. In 1790 William Sr. lists only himself in his household. James is not included. In William Jr.'s household, he lists himself and a William Vanhorn. A road order dated 11 January 1790 directs James and William (probably Jr.) Armstrong and two others to view the way for a potential road and make a report. In the 1791 tax list James is again shown living with William Sr., and William Vanhorne is still living with William Jr. In 1792 William Vanhorne still lives with William (Jr.). In the household of William Sr., the white males above age 16 are himself, James Armstrong, and--for the first time--Amos Armstrong. In 1793 only Amos is living with William (Sr.). James is now listed separately. Earlier that year, on 12 February 1793, James had married Mary Vanhorne. William Jr. lists only himself. William Vanhorn(e) is no longer living with him. William Jr. appears in no subsequent Loudoun County tax list. In 1794 and 1795 James is listed separately and William (Sr.) still has Amos living with him. The writing is faint, but the 1794 and 1795 lists appear to say "William Armstrong & Son Amos". No Armstrongs are found in 1796. In 1797 only James is listed in Loudoun County. William Sr. and Jr. were now in Pendleton County. James continues to be the only Armstrong in the Loudoun County tax list through 1802. On 20 February 1803, Amos Armstrong marries Margaret Vanhorne. In 1803 and 1804, James Armstrong and Amos Armstrong are listed separately. In 1805 only Amos is listed. In 1806 Amos is again listed. Also listed in 1806 is a David Armstrong who has living with him a William Ross. In 1807 only James Armstrong is listed. There are no tax records for 1808. No Armstrongs are found in 1809, but in 1810 James Armstrong is again listed. James The same Armstrong is also found in the 1810 census of Loudoun County. In 1811 no Armstrongs are listed.
As noted previously, in the Pendleton County personal property tax lists from 1797 to 1804 only John Armstrong, William Armstrong Sr., and William Armstrong Jr. appear. Curiously, however, on 13 February 1802 Amos Armstrong (and George Erwin, a son of Jared) are witnesses to sale of land on the Bullpasture by Edward Hinds to John Erwin (also a son of Jared). In 1805 "William of Jno" appears in the tax list for the first time. He is present again in 1806. In 1807 Amos Armstrong appears for the first time, but William of John is no longer present (perhaps having moved to Ohio). In 1810 Jared Armstrong first appears. Although not identified as such, Jared was the son of John Armstrong.
Thus in Pendleton County in 1810 there were five Armstrong households whose heads were John, William Sr, William Jr., Amos, and Jared (son of John).
In 1812, John Armstrong, the son of William Jr., makes his first appearance in the personal property tax records. He is referred to as "John Jr." On 11 October 1812, John Armstrong marries Mary (Polly) Wilson, daughter of Eli B. (Elibab) Wilson and Hannah Haptonstall. (Elibab Wilson is a son of Capt. Samuel Wilson, who was killed by Indians at the Battle of Point Pleasant on 10 October 1774.)
The death record for this John Armstrong can be seen at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=5960688&Type=Death . He died in Banks Township, Upshur County, WV on 4 July 1871 at the age of 80 years (no months or days indicated). That would indicate he was born in the year 1791 before 4 July.
In this examination of the Armstrongs of the upper Bullpasture, there is one relationship which needs to be better defined, namely, who Amos Armstrong is. Is he the Amos who lived with William Sr. in Loudoun County and who married a Vanhorne in 1803? Strangely, no Amos is mentioned in the will of William Armstrong Sr., who died in 1814.
A Pendleton County marriage bond dated 31 October 1831 for Godlove Hindgardner and Nancy Armstrong lists a Burgess Armstrong as a bondsman "Amos Armstrong consent of father".
Amos is still alive in 1840. The 1840 census of Pendleton County shows his age to be between 60 and 70 years. There is a female in his household age 70-80. His wife? These is also a male age 20-30 and a female age 10-15.
It might be useful to follow the disposition of his lands in Pendleton (or Highland) County after he either died there or sold his lands and moved away.

6 October 1794
Robert and Isable Duffield ... to William Armstrong, Louden Co., 200 acres on Newfoundland Creek (now the Bull Pasture River) ...
Excerpts from the Full text:
Note: In this Indenture, the name of James Armstrong was mistakenly used in several places instead of William Armstrong Senr.
This mistake was corrected on 1 October 1816 when James Armstrong "sold" this land to William Armstrong Jr. (who had inherited
it upon the death of William Sr. in 1814) for one dollar. (See Pendleton County Deed Book 6, p.343.)
In this 1816 deed, James and his wife Mary were "of the County of Fairfax and State of Virginia".
Presumably this James was the James who was the son of William Sr. and brother of William Jr.
Note also that "Senr." was inserted at the end of William Armstrong's name in two places. After these occurrences "James" replaced
"William" in the remainder of the deed. Very near the end of the deed "James Armstrong Senr." was written.

Discussion of the 1840 and 1850 censuses
In comparing the 1840 census to the 1850 census, we can reasonably assign the following names to the males and females listed in the household of William Welch in 1840:
1 male under 5 [Henry Welch]
1 male 20 and under 30 [William Welch, which implies that William did not die in 1839 as estimated in the court case given below]
2 females under 5 [one of whom was Huldah Welch; the other is unidentified]
1 female 5 and under 10 [Margaret Welch]
1 female 20 and under 30 [Mary Welch]
It will be presumed that the unidentified female under age 5 in 1840 was deceased by 1850.
It will also be presumed that Simon Welch was born just after the enumeration of the 1840 census.

Discussion
Mary Welch Kirkendall and her husband Daniel Kirkendall, as of 30 Aug 1852, were described as living in Indiana (no county stated).
Simon Welch was not mentioned as an heir of William Welch, and so it will be presumed that he died between 1850 and 30 August 1852.
Henry Ebbert [sic-Albert] Welch, as of 30 Aug 1852, was described as living in Wood County, Ohio.
Mary Margaret Welch, as of 9 March 1852, was described as living in Dekalb County, Indiana. On 13 Jun 1852 in Dekalb Co., she married William Kirkendall.
Online sources say William V. Kirkendall (1828-1896) was the son of Van Kirkendall (1791-1829) and Keziah Milbourn (1791-1865).(no known relationship to Daniel Kirkendall).
Huldah Jane Welch, as of 30 Aug 1852, was also described as living in Dekalb County, Indiana. No further records have been found (so far).

Granville was captured on Sept. 12, 1863 at Centerville, Virginia, along with his father and their small militia group.
Granville is the son of John Wilson Armstrong (1820-1864) and Sarah Talbott Armstrong (1826-1860). Granville was not married.
His father, John, was also a prisoner of war at Andersonville and died there. His grave is #5011 at this cemetery.
Note: This tombstone reads J.B. Armstrong, but in looking closely at the prison records, think it was just an error in transcribing as other "G's" on the same page look the same. Other records list this grave number for Granville.

The Sixth West Virginia Veteran Cavalry Volunteers,
July, 1864, To June, 1866.
The time of the non-veterans of the Sixth West Virginia Regiment expired in July, 1864. The regiment was reorganized at Cumberland, Md., in the same month. Those re-enlisting were formed into five campanies and two new companies added. The regiment was remounted at North Bridge, August 22, and ordered a few days later to report at New Creek where it was consolidated with the Fifth Regiment and was afterwards known as the Sixth West Virginia Veteran Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Latham.

...
On June 8th [1865], orders were received to report at Cloud's Mills, Va. Four days later the Sixth returned to Washington, and camped near the south end of Long Bridge where it remained until June 12th. The boys who had reenlisted for "three years more or during the war," now thought the war over, and visions of home flitted through many a brain. But, alas, orders were received for this regiment, in company with the 2d Mass., the 14th Pa., and 21st N. Y., to go to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, via Cincinnati and St. Louis. An incident of this trip was a collision on the night of June 20th, at Carlisle, Ill. Three men and seventy-three horses were killed. Daylight showed a mass of broken cars piled high upon each other. Upon the very top of one of these piles, thirty feet above the trestle, which was itself thirty feet above the ground, stood, unhurt, a gallant black steed, "Bismarck," the property of Lieutenant Brazie.
Fort Leavenworth was reached June 29th, and here they awaited further orders until July 16th. Then came the word that the Sixth should report at Fort Kearney on the Plains, where the work of subduing the hostile Indians awaited them.
The boys of the Sixth had fought many severe battles, endured long marches and untold hardships for Uncle Sam without a murmur. Now, the civil war having ended, many believed their duty was done. They declared they had not sworn to do duty against the savages and refused to move from Leavenworth.
Major [Andrew J.] Squires, in command of about one-third of the regiment, was sent to Fort Kearney, while Colonel [Rufus E.] Fleming remained with the rebellious twothirds. By dint of much persuasion the objectors were soon brought to terms and moved forward to Julesburg. Major Squires' command crossed' the Platte River and were assigned to escort duty for the overland mail, and as a reward for their obedience never encountered the Indians.
On the contrary, Colonel Fleming's command had several severe battles with the redskins on this side of the Platte, but in their new method of warfare they proved that the men whose state motto is "montani semper liberi" were equal to the conquering of a savage foe.

p.232
...
That part of the regiment under command of Major Squires, wintered at Fort Casper, Dakota, while Colonel Fleming's command remained at Julesburg and Cottonwood Springs. At the latter place the two commands were ordered to consolidate in March, 1866, thence to march to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, a distance of 385 miles. This completed the service of the Sixth West Virginia Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. Mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, May 22, 1866, it was ordered to Wheeling, West Virginia, for pay and final discharge June 1, 1866. On the arrival at Wheeling, a banquet was tendered to the regiment at the McClure House. Before the boys separated, Col. R. E. Fleming was given a proof of the confidence and esteem of his fellow officers by receiving from them a handsome gold watch which he proudly wears to this day.

John Strader, Jr., a member of Co. E, 3rd Virginia Regiment, ... later the 6th West Virginia Cavalry, wrote ... on January 11, 1866, from Fort Casper, Dakota Territory. Homesick though he was, he did write: "Well you wanted me to tell you about the Indians. Well this part of the regiment has not had any fights with the Indians yet. Henry H. Armstrong come up here about one month ago, he said some had guns like ours, bows and arrows. Fleming's part of the regiment has had three fights with redskins, whipped them on every hand. They come pretty near getting some of the boys, one of our boys was killed when on his way here. Distance of 200 miles east of us and they have 3 of the same company has died in the last 30 days, two was buried last Saturday. They all belong to Co. A and they have lost 5 men since we left West Va. One was killed on the cars coming out to St. Louis when the cars smashed up. " ...

More on Fort Casper:
Platte Bridge Station/Fort Casper
Companies A, B, C, and D of the First Battalion of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (O.V.C.) reached Fort Laramie on May 30, 1862. Regimental commander Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins received orders on June 3 to proceed with three companies west along the trail to South Pass. His purpose was to protect the employees and property of the Overland Mail Company and the Pacific Telegraph.
During the first week of June 1862, the troops from Company D, 6th O.V.C. began establishing an outpost near Guinard’s bridge. Soldiers spent much of the summer repairing the telegraph line damaged by raiding Shoshone, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. The raiding was so successful that on July 11, 1862, the Postmaster General of the United States ordered all mail carriers to abandon this portion of the route in favor of the Overland Trail through southern Wyoming.
By the end of 1862, Platte Bridge Station had taken shape. On October 27, Captain Peter Van Winkle reported that he had 28 men, completed quarters and stabling, and rations to last until April. On November 1, Van Winkle reported three officers and 60 men for duty, two on detached service, one sick, three absent sick, and four awaiting discharge. He had 62 serviceable horses.
In July 1863, Collins organized a Second Battalion of Ohio Volunteer Cavalry consisting of Companies E, F, G, and H. The State of Ohio consolidated it with the first battalion to form the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. Because his regiment was 50 men short when he recruited the new companies in 1863, Collins gave Confederate prisoners of war a chance to join. Men enlisted in this manner were known as "Galvanized Yankees." By October 10, the troops arrived at their new posts.
Companies A, B, C, and D of the 11th O.V.C. were scheduled to muster out at Omaha, Nebraska, in April 1865. To fill the gap, the 11th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry was sent out. The Kansas troops arrived in the area April 19 and established regimental headquarters about six miles from Platte Bridge Station at a temporary tent camp called Camp Dodge. Additional reinforcements in the region included members of both the 3rd and 6th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiments, made up of “Galvanized Yankees.”
In response to the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of Black Kettle’s Cheyenne by Colonel Chivington’s militia in Colorado Territory, Plains tribes increased raids along the trails the following spring. In July 1865, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho gathered to attack Platte Bridge Station. On July 26, Lieutenant Caspar Collins led a small detachment from Platte Bridge Station to escort an army supply train traveling from Sweetwater Station. Less than a mile from the bridge, Collins’ men were ambushed and had to fight their way back to the fort. Five soldiers including Collins were killed in the Battle of Platte Bridge. Sergeant Amos Custard and 24 men with the supply wagons were attacked later that day five miles west of the fort. Only three soldiers survived the Battle of Red Buttes.
On October 26, new troops from Company A, C, F, and G of the 6th West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry arrived at Platte Bridge Station. The October post return for 1865 reported the following troops on duty: nine officers and 82 men of the 6th West Virginia, two officers and 149 men of the 11th Ohio, and three officers and 11 men of the 6th Infantry.
More troops necessitated a new fort, which the army began building in the fall of 1865. Over the next two years, the army built more than 20 new buildings to house 400-500 soldiers. By Special Order 49 dated November 21, 1865, Major General John Pope changed the name of Platte Bridge Station to Fort Casper, misspelling the fallen lieutenant’s name. Pope chose the lieutenant's first name because there already was a Fort Collins in Colorado named for his father.
