A Quick Summary
Eve Elizabeth Harper, the daughter of Philip Harper, was born in Germany in 1742. Philip brought his family to Philadelphia in 1750, and by 1758 they were living on the upper waters of the South Branch of the Potomac River in present-day Pendleton County, West Virginia. By the middle of April 1758 Eve Elizabeth was married to a man named Moser. The couple were at Fort Seybert on 28 April 1758 when it was captured by Indians. Moser was killed and she was taken prisoner. She lived with the Indians for six years before being released in late 1764. In 1766 she married Jacob Peterson Jr. (Jacob's brother Martin and several sisters had been captured by Indians in February 1757. Martin managed to escape after several weeks or months.)
Jacob and Eve Elizabeth had two sons, Philip and Jacob, and five daughters. In Jacob's will, written 16 May 1803 and proved 14 February 1815, their names were given as Mary, Elizabeth, Sally, Eve, and Phebe. Evidently Mary was Mary Susanna, Eve was Eve Catherine, and Sally was Sarah "Sally".
Philip married Elizabeth Hagler. Mary Susanna married Leonard Hagler, Elizabeth's brother. Phebe married Abraham Bush. Eve Catherine married Christopher Armentrout. Jacob married first Elizabeth King and second Hannah Stookey.
Elizabeth married George Post, and Sarah "Sally" probably married Martin Post.
Introductory Note
Curiously, there were three apparently distinct and unrelated families named Harper (according to limited DNA tests) who settled on the upper waters of the South Branch of the Potomac River in what is now Pendleton County, WV. The patriarchs of these three Harper families were named Philip, Jacob, and Adam. Records prove that Philip was born in Germany. His surname Harper was anglicized from the German Herber or Herper. Probably Jacob and Adam were also German since the settlers in this area were predominantly German and Swiss. Philip's family arrived in Philadelphia on 11 August 1750 on board the ship Patience. All three patriarchs first appear in records of Augusta County, VA in 1758.
The patriarch Philip is commonly referred to as Philip the Pioneer, and the patriarch Jacob as Jacob the Pioneer. Adam has never been designated Adam the Pioneer. Hence, I refer to him simply as the Adam Harper who died in 1820.
Philip the Pioneer died 12 February 1798. His three sons were Nicholas (b.1747-1818), Philip (b.1750-1832), and Jacob (b.1752-1826).

Mrs. Shobe, an aged and respectable lady, living on
Mill creek, in Hardy county, informed the author ...
...
Martin Peterson was taken a prisoner on the South
Branch, and carried to the Sandusky towns. He used to
accompany the Indians in their hunting excursions,
and was permitted to have one load of powder and ball
each day, which he always discharged at the game they
met with. As he gained on the confidence of his cap-
tors, they increased his allowance to two loads, and sub-
sequently to three. The same allowance was made to
two other white prisoners. These three, one day, after
receiving their allowance, determined to attempt an es-
cape, and left the towns accordingly. As they ventured
to travel only at night, guided by the north star, their
progress was exceedingly slow and difficult. On the
second day one of their number died from fatigue, and
Peterson took his ammunition. A day or two after-
p.120
wards, his remaining companion also gave out, and Pe-
terson taking his ammunition, left him to perish. He
then pursued his way alone, and after a succession of
hardships, came at length in sight of the Fort. But
here, when within reach of his deliverance, his hopes were
well-nigh blasted ; for the sentry, mistaking him for an
Indian, fired ! Happily the ball missed its aim, and he
was able to make himself known before the fire was re-
peated. This Fort was on the farm now the residence of
Mr. John Welton, near Petersburg, Hardy county. *
Seybert's Fort, was erected on the South Fork of the
South Branch of the Potomac, on the land now owned
by Mr. Ferdinand Lair, twelve miles northeast of Frank-
lin, the present county seat of Pendleton. In the year
1758, a party of Indians surprised the Fort, in which
were thirty persons. They bound ten, whom they con-
veyed without the Fort, and then proceeded to massacre
the others in the following manner : They seated them
in a row upon a log, with an Indian standing behind
each; and at a given signal, each Indian sunk his to-
mahawk into the head of his victim : an additional
blow or two dispatched them. The scene was witness-
ed by James Dyer, a lad fourteen years old, who, not having
been removed without the Fort, supposed that he also
was to be massacred. He was, however, spared, and ta-
ken to Log Town, sixteen miles below Fort Pitt, thence to
the mouth of the Muskingum River, and thence to the
spot where Chilicothe now stands, where he remained
a prisoner one year and ten months. He had by this
time gained the entire confidence of his captors, and
was permitted to accompany them to Fort Pitt on a tra-
ding expedition. When there he planned his escape,
and happily succeeded. Being sent out for some bread
with an Indian lad, he slipped into a hovel, unobserved
by his companion, and implored the protection of the
poor woman who occupied it. She told him to get be-
hind a chest, the only furniture in the room, and threw
upon him a bed. The Indians, on missing him, spent

the afternoon in search, during which they looked into
the very hovel where he was, and left the place on the
next morning on their return. Fort Pitt being then in
possession of the English, a trooper very kindly convey-
ed him 6 or 7 miles behind him, whence be made his
way to his friends in Pennsylvania, where he remained
two years longer, and then returned to South Fork.*
Another tradition says that Seybert's Fort was not sur-
prised. It had been invested for two or three days, and
after two Indians had been killed, the garrison agreed
to surrender on condition that their lives should be spa-
red, which was solemnly pledged. The gate was then
opened, and the Indians rushed in with demoniac yells.
The whites then fled with precipitation, but were retaken,
with the exception of one man. The massacre then
took place, as before related, and ten were taken off as
prisoners.
Another tradition says, that on the fort's being given
up the Indians seated twenty of the garrison in two
rows, all of whom they killed except the wife of Jacob
Peterson. When they reached her, an Indian interpo-
sed to save her life, and some altercation ensued. The
friendly Indian at length prevailed, and throwing her
a pair of moccasons, told her to march off with the pri-
soners. How long she remained in captivity is not re-
membered.†

the James Dyer mentioned.
† Mrs. Shobe informed the author that she had heard the wife of Jacob Pe-
terson frequently relate this.
Who then was Mrs. Shobe?
Kercheval's described Mrs. Shobe on page 119 (of the 1933 edition):
"Mrs. Shobe, an aged and respectable lady living on Mill Creek, in Hardy county..."
See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=142234755 :
Her headstone reads "MAGDALEN, Wife of RUDOLPH SHOBE, DIED Dec. 18, 1848, Aged about 93 years.". Thus she was born about 1755.
On page 29 of Clyde S. Boots, "Peterson (Biedert) Family Record", in an excerpt of Clara G. Mark's notes on the Peterson Family, a note, apparently added by Boots himself, identified her more fully:
"**-Old Mrs. Shobe on Mill Creek was Magdaline Hyer, daughter of Rudolph Hyre, and wife of 'Little Rudy Shobe' who lived on North Mill Creek."
And on the same page, an excerpt from Mrs. Mildred Peterson Kerr stated further that Rudolph/Rudy Hyer was the brother of "Little Rudy Shobe's" mother Anna Barbara Hyer, thus making "Little Rudy" Shobe and Magdalene Hyer Shobe first cousins. Their relationship is diagrammed in the tree below.
This tree shows that two of Eve Elizabeth Harper's children--Susannah Peterson and Philip Peterson--married Hagler siblings who were first cousins of Magdaline Heyer Shobe (Kercheval's Mrs. Shobe):
Leonard Heyer + Clara Lutzler Jacob Peterson + Sarah Mohlerin Philip Harper + Elizabeth Kauffmann

| | | |
“Little” Rudolph Shobe + Magdalene Heyer { Elizabeth Hagler + Philip Peterson } siblings
{ Leonard Hagler + Susannah Peterson }
However, there is some question regarding who Magdalene's parents really were. Her supposed father Rudolph Hyer died intestate in Stokes County, North Carolina in 1800.
A page in his estate papers (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9GF-TCVM?i=11&cc=1911121 ) identified his widow Nancy and a number of children by name,
none of whom was a Magdalene who had intermarried with Rudolph Shobe.
Rudolph Hyer/Heyer/Hire's brother Leonard Hire died in Hampshire County, Virginia in 1785-1786. In his will (see https://www.wvgenweb.org/hardy/hlwill.htm ) Leonard identified
his only daughter as Mary. Some researchers have speculated that her full name was Mary Magdalene Hire and that it was she who married Little Rudy Shobe.
Given the lack of evidence, it might also be possible that Magdalene was not even a Heyer. In that case only her husband Little Rudy Shobe was first cousin to siblings Elizabeth and Leonard Hagler.

[Jonas Peterson, son of John Peterson (and Mary Harper), son of Martin Peterson]
p.874
Jonas Peterson, sr., retired farmer, Xenia., was born in Hardy
County, Virginia, September 8,1800. His great-grandfather, John
Jacob Bidert, afterward corrupted into Peterson in the translation
into English, was born in Barenville County, Basol-of-Laugenburg,
Switzerland, January 7, 1706, of Christian parents, who were de-
voted to their adherence to church discipline. The early school
advantage of young Hans or John were such as the poorer classes
received at that day in Switzerland. August 13,1728, he was mar-
ried to Sarah Mohlerin, a near neighbor girl, and by her had nine
children, four of whom were born in Switzerland : Jacob, John
Martin, Michael[sic-Ursula. Michael was born later in America], and Sarah. July 23, 1736, he sailed for America.
His passport was made out in due form, and on it his destination
was marked as the "Island of Pennsylvania." Prior to sailing, he
was presented by his pastor, N. John Fredrick Westein, with a
letter recommending him and his wife and four children to the
kind mercies of the people on this side of the Atlantic; asking the
blessing of the Ruler of all upon them, both spiritually and tem-
porally, and the prayer of this divine man seems to have been
answered in all respects, for the family is noted for piety, and their
temporal wants are fully supplied. He landed in Phildelphia, and
remained in Pennsylvania some few years, and then removed to
Augusta County, Virginia-this county was afterwards divided, and
their home was in Hardy County. In this country they had born to
them five more children: Anna Maria, Trina Bettie, Annie Maria
Barbara, and two children who died in infancy. In Virginia he
took an oath of allegiance to Our Sovereign Lord, King George
III., by the grace of God, King of Great Britain. This instrument
was signed in the presence of Frau[Francis] Fauquire, November 20, in the
fifth year of the aforesaid sovereign's reign. The records do not
give the date of the death of either John Jacob Peterson or his
wife, Sara (Mohlerin) Peterson, but judging from the longevity of
the subject, they each lived to a ripe old age.
John Martin Peterson was born in Switzerland, as already stated,
May 20, 1730, and came to this country with his parents July 23,
1736. After they had been in this country some time, be was
taken prisoner by the Indians, as were also his three step[sic]-sisters
and a Mr. Moser, and his wife, formerly Eve Elizabeth Harper.
p.875
The others who had been in the party were killed by their captors,
but John M. [i.e. Martin], managed to escape. He made his way back to North
Carolina, and then married Miss ----- Teeter, by whom he had
three sons and three daughters: Jacob, John (father of the subject
of our sketch), Joseph, Elizabeth, married to Garrett Boots; Bar-
bara, married to Peter Hoffman, and Rosanna, married to David
Hoffman. To return to our captives a short time : Mr. Moser was
killed by an Indian with a tomahawk, while he was sitting on a
log with his wife; she was kept six years a prisoner and slave, and
then exchanged by the French and Indians at Upper Sandusky.
She afterward was married to Jacob Peterson. After fourteen
years, Anna Maria was delivered to her brother, Jacob. She went
back to Virginia, and afterward to Ohio, where she died in Ross
County, and was buried on the north fork of Paint Creek. The
other two girls were given to the French. Annie Maria Barbara
married a Frenchman named Lewis, and it is thought Lewis, the
Rocky Mountain explorer, was a son of hers. Trina Bettie was
taken to France, butt afterward returned to Philadelphia, where she
died of the measels. The period of the death of John Martin Pe-
terson and Teeter Peterson is also lost, but we have assurance
they lived to quite a good age.
[Note that the above account by Dills is a bit vague as to timing. Six children of Jacob Peterson (Martin and his sisters)
were taken by Indians in February 1757. Eve Elizabeth Harper and her husband Mr. Moser were captured by Indians at
Fort Seybert on April 28, 1758. Moser was tomahawked and Eve Elizabeth was taken prisoner.]

JACOB PETERSON, JR. (deceased). Jacob Peterson, Jr., the subject of
this sketch, was born in Hardy County, West Virginia., on the 28th day of Jan-

uary, 1785. He was raised to manhood on a farm on Mill Creek, a tributary of
the South Branch of the Potomac River. His education was such as the condition of
the country at that time afforded. The principal part of his early education was in the
German language. His English schooling was limited. yet by close application he
became proficient in the common branches of the English language. He gathered
much useful information by reading, in which he employed much of his leisure time.
Our knowledge of his ancestry dates back to his grandfather, Hans Jacob Peterson,
who was born in the year 1706, in Barenville, County of Langdenburg, Switzerland.
He was married to Sarah Mohlerin on the 13th day of February, 1728. He had nine
children, the oldest four having been born in Switzerland. In the year 1736, he
emigrated after having procured the necessary passport, which read as follows :
"The Burgomaster and Council of the City of Basle testify herewith that in our city, and
this region of country, there is no contagious disease raging, but by the grace of God we enjoy
a pure air free from all infections, and we therefore manfully request that our former citizen,
Hans Jacob Peterson, who together with his family, consisting of his wife and four children,
intend to travel, first by water to Rotterdam, and then per ship to the Island of Pennsylvania,
he permitted to pass and repass at all places safely and without hindrance. Such favors we are
ready promptly to return according to our Government custom.
"Given under the printed smaller seal of our city the 23d day of April, 1736."
He with his family arrived at Philadelphia. After living in Pennsylvania for some
years, he went with his family to Augusta County, Va., and finally settled in Hardy
County, Va., that being a frontier settlement where the settlers were much exposed to In-
dian raids, which were frequent. His second son, Martin (with others), was taken prisoner
by the Indians, and was six months with them west of the Ohio River, in the Muskin-
gum, Scioto and Miami Valleys. After many hardships, he succeeded in making his
escape. At another time, three of his daughters were taken prisoners. Two of them
never returned. Anna, the other daughter, after being kept fourteen years, was ex-
changed at Upper Sandusky and returned home. After passing through the trials and
hardships of a frontier life, he died at an advanced age at his home in Hardy County,
Va. Jacob, his eldest son, was born November 6, 1729, in Switzerland, and was mar-
ried to Eve Elizabeth Harper, on the 14th of April, 1766. She, previous to this time,
had been prisoner with the Indians six years. He was a farmer by occupation and
lived on Mill Creek, Hardy County, Va. ...

[still referring to Jacob Peterson who married Eve Elizabeth Harper]
He was the father of seven children, two sons and five daughters. He died in
October, 1814, at the advanced age of eighty-five. His wife died December 2,
1816. They had lived together as husband and wife forty-eight years seven months
and three days. This brings us to Jacob Peterson, Jr., second son of the above union,
and subject of this sketch. He was married to Elizabeth King, March 6, 1805, and
on the 12th day of March, 1806, she died. He was married again on the 12th of
March 1809, to Hannah Stucky. ...

... [referring to Jacob Peterson, Jr. (b.1785)] ... In the win-
ter of 1866-67, he made a visit to his daughter, living in Logan County; while return-
ing, he contracted a severe cold, which resulted in pneumonia. Arriving at Xenia, he
stopped at his son Abel's, where he rapidly grew worse, and died on the 3d day of Janu-
ary, 1867. He was the father of ten children, nine of who survive him. Elizabeth
Ann, the eldest, married John Nash; Abel, the eldest son, married Alivia A. Weaver;
Jesse, married Eleanor A. Weaver; Aaron, married Jane B. Wickersham; Amy, mar-
ried John Bush; Archibald, married Mary C. McNair; Abraham married Naomi
Middleton; after her death he married Mary W. Sleeper; Hannah J. married George
H. Moore; Jacob S., married Sarah C. Ellis, daughter of Henry Ellis, and grand-daugh-
ter of Abraham Ellis.
JACOB S. PETERSON, New Burlington, son of Jacob Peterson, Jr., was born
March 19, 1824, in the township of Chester, Clinton Co., Ohio, being one of a large
family of children. His boyhood days were hapily spent at home. He early attended
school in the characteristic log schoolhouse of the day, receiving tuition from teachers in
excellent keeping with the buildings in which they were taught. Such an education as he
could acquire in this manner he subsequently improved greatly by close and profitable
reading. He also cultivated a talent for music, in which he seemed proficient. From
his position as a farmer's lad he became physically well developed, and his social quali-
ties have made for him many fast friends in the course of his life. Having been un-
der the influence of Christian training by his parents, he held a high estimation of good
morals, and at the age of eighteen, on the 16th day of April, 1842, he united with the
German Reformed Church, at Xenia, and was confirmed by Rev. David Winters, then
pastor. In 1843 he became a member of the Reformed organization at Caesar's Creek,
where he remained until 1874, when he united with the Mount Pisgah congregation
formed in that year. November 23, 1848, he married Sarah Catherine Ellis, Rev.
Henry Willard performing the ceremony. The lady was the daughter of Abraham
Ellis, of Liberty Township. January 23, 1849, Mr. Peterson and his wife began
housekeeping on a portion of his father's farm, where they lived ten years. In the
meantime he purchased land adjoining, upon which he moved with his family April 23,
1859, making it his residence since that time. The farm consists of 200 acres, well-
improved, and its owner devotes his time principally to raising grain and stock. His
first ballot for President was cast for Zachary Taylor, in 1848 ; he voted with the Whig
party until the Republican party was organized, since which time he has voted in the
interest of that political body. His influence has been always exerted for the good of
his community. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson are the parents of the following children---
Emma Clare, born December 22, 1849, married James W. Middleton, October 4, 1871;
Ada Irene, born July 23, 1852, married George A. McKay, September 25, 1873; Or-
ville Ellis, born November 21, 1854, married Luella B. Oglesbee, August 22, 1877;
Alice Maria, born August 16, 1860; Jacob Elmer, born September 20, 1862; Eva
Grace, born February 4, 1869.

This next account is one written by Mrs. Ruth Boots Graham in the mid 20th century. It claims to be the story as handed down through her family. It is very informative, but because of its relatively recent vintage, we cannot be absolutely certain that elements from other sources have not been incorporated. Of significance--if not derived from material found in Kercheval or Morton--is the mentioning of moccasins being thrown down for her.
Cited in the "Peterson (Biedert) Family Record" by Clyde Boots (1979), page 154-155 [LDS film# 1036370 item 1]:
(Mrs. Ruth Boots Graham of Xenia, Ohio, a descendant of Mary Susannah Peterson, daughter of Jacob Peterson [and Eve Elizabeth Harper] and niece of Martin Peterson, relates the following:
"My grandfather, Raper Hagler, related the story as it was told to him by his grandmother, Mary Susannah Peterson Hagler [wife of Leonard Hagler who was the son of Sebastian Hagler]: 'Martin Peterson looked so much like a real Indian that the people in the Fort were frightened and shot at him. He hid behind a tree and yelled out- "Martin Peterson! Martin Peterson! Martin Peterson!", until someone recognized his voice.'" Some of the other white people who were with the Indians and escaped later, said the Indians gathered around the campfire when he did not return, put their ears to the ground and said that he was at a certain place by a campfire, eating deer meat. This story was told to Mary Susannah by her uncle Martin himself. He made a butter paddle for Mary Susannah out of a laural root, which I have. It was used during Mary Susannah's lifetime and was being used by my great grandmother, Charlotte Hagler, when Grandpa and Grandma were married in 1866. When my Grandmother heard about it, she said, "I think it's time you quit using this and keep it for a relic". Eve Elizabeth said that when she and her husband, Mr. Moser, were captured by the Indians, she kicked their meat into the fire. When they tomahawked Mr. Moser, they threw down moccasins for her and spared her life. Mary Susannah was affectionately called by her family - "Granny Hagler". I was born in the same room in which she died, as was my mother and brother. This is the true story of Granny's mother [namely, Eve Elizabeth Harper Moser Peterson] as she [Granny/Susannah] told it to Grandpa [Raper Hagler]." --Mrs. Ruth Boots Graham.)

Jacob Stookey Peterson, who was the nephew of Philip, evidently wrote a Peterson genealogy circa 1860. This is according to another Peterson descendant. I have a photocopy of a typed copy which was donated to Greene County Library. I cannot really tell when or by whom it was written. Assuming it to be legitimate, it no doubt served as the basis for the Peterson stories presented in the histories of Greene and Clinton Counties. Part of the text reads:
III. Jacob Peterson, eldest son of John Jacob Peterson, was married to Eve Elizabeth Harper on the 14th day of April, 1766, with whom he lived forty-eight years, seven months, and three days. To them were born seven children, two sons [Philip and Jacob III] and five daughters, two of the latter dying in infancy. Previous to her marriage to Jacob Peterson, Eve Elizabeth Harper had been a prisoner with the Indians six years, having been captured by the Indians at the same time the three sisters of Jacob Peterson were taken. She, at the time of her capture, had a short time before been married to a man by the name of Moser. He was also taken prisoner and killed at her side by an Indian who struck him in the head with a tomahawk.
Jacob Stookey Peterson's account also tells that Martin Peterson "fell into the hands of the Indians and was for six months a prisoner among them". He gives no indication that Martin was taken at the same time as his sisters. He treats it as a separate incident. Note that in the above excerpt the author indicates that three daughters and Eve Elizabeth Harper and her husband were all captured at the same time. Earlier in the text he had identified the three daughters as Maria, Ursula, and Anna. The first two never returned. "Ursula was taken to France, and later back to Philadelphia where she died of measles. Anna, after many years, got back to her people, and some years after came to Ross County, Ohio, where she died and was buried in the Mallow graveyard." How the author obtained this information is unknown.
So even though this purported account by Jacob Stookey Peterson, along with and the subsequent histories of Greene and Clinton Counties, says some things that I would take issue with, the most significant being that Eve Elizabeth Harper was captured at the same time as the Peterson children, I have not found any evidence to indicate that Eve Elizabeth Harper did not first marry a man named Moser.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeth Ann Bush (1821-1902) was the daughter of Abraham Bush and Phoebe Peterson. Phoebe was the daughter of Jacob Peterson Jr. and Eve Elizabeth Harper. She married Barnett Blue.
According to a note in the excerpt below, "Elizabeth Ann Bush Blue said her grandmother was stolen by Indians". Unfortunately, the note provides no details regarding when or to whom she passed on this story. Also, the way the note is written, it is difficult to determine what information originated with Elizabeth herself and what information was supplied by the writer. For example, did she know the name of her grandmother, or that the family was Pennsylvania Dutch?

Grandmother was Eva Elizabeth Harper dau of Adam Harper,
Pendleton Co., Va. See Morton's History [of Pendleton County, WV]
[sjz's note: Eve Elizabeth Harper was not the daughter of Adam Harper.
Nor does Morton say this. What Morton does present on page 48 is a
muddled account which combines some facts with some fanciful story-telling:
"Thus a Harper girl of the connection of Philip Harper, living above the
mouth of Seneca was carried away. In company with a girl taken from Grant
she fled from the Indian village while the braves were away from home. The
Ohio was crossed by means of a log. Both girls were in rags when they
regained their homes. The Harper girl married a Peterson."]
Note: See Dill’s History of Fayette Co. O. It says Abram
Bush farmer and ex Co. Commissioner b Fayette Co. Nov.

1.1.1.1.1.4 Barnett BLUE Jr. (1808-1864), m.1838 Elizabeth Ann BUSH (1821-1902), dau. of Abraham and Phoebe (PETERSON) BUSH who came to OH from VA in 1810. Barnett was born in VA and they were married in Fayette Co. OH, where Elizabeth was born. After the birth of their first child, Allen T., they moved to Platte Co. MO where he was in charge of a large plantation. They remained there until 1851 when they moved to Bunker Hill IN where his mother and some of his brothers had settled. The anti-slavery sympathies of the Blues may have encouraged them to move north. Barnett was buried the day Lincoln was elected President the second time. He had expressed the wish to vote for Lincoln, but missed it by several days. Elizabeth, being much younger than her husband, died almost 40 years later. She had been well provided for and lived with her younger son, John, until her death. Barnett and Elizabeth Ann are buried in the Rankin Cemetery near Bunker Hill IN.

In this 1916 account, although Bosworth correctly indicated that it was the great grandmother of the Christopher Armentrout born in 1845 who was captured at Fort Seybert, he erroneously called her Catherine Peterson. Eve Catherine was this Christopher's grandmother. She was not born until 1779. It was Eve Catherine's mother, Eve Elizabeth Harper Peterson, who was captured at Fort Seybert. The reference to her as "Mrs. Peterson" originated with Kercheval.

THE ARMENTROUT FAMILY.
The Armentrout Family. This family is of German de-
scent. The name was originally spelled Erhmantrout. Chris-
topher Armentrout moved from Rockingham County, Vir-
ginia, to what is now Grant County prior to the Revolution.
The immediate ancestors of the Armentrouts in Randolph
lived in Grant and Pendleton counties.
Hiram, son of Christopher, was born in Pendleton Coun-
ty in 1811. He married Amanda Smith. Their children were,
John W., who married Martha Dolly; Christopher, who mar-
ried Pheoba Mullenix; Aaron, Mary, Martha, Isaac, Anne,
Susan, Adina and Nevada.
John W. Armentrout was born in 1843 and was married
in 1868 to Martha, daughter of John and Susan Dolly. Their
children are Robert E., Laura V., Stella C, Jasper C. and
Wilbur E.
Christopher Armentrout was born in 1845. Children, Ola
E., Vista G., Carrey L., Elva T., Viva and Orgie. He came
from Pendleton to Randolph in 1872 and was elected a mem-
ber of the county court in 1888. His grandfather, Christopher
Armentrout, was born in Grant County in 1775. In 1792 he
entered 218 acres of land in the vicinity in which his grand-
son, Christopher, is now a resident, but he did not occupy it.
His greatgrandmother, Catherine [sic] Peterson, was captured at
Fort Seybert by the Indians in 1758. About forty settlers
p.306
were in the fort and all were massacred but two who were
held in captivity and taken to their village near Chilicothe,
Ohio. Catherine Peterson was among the number spared.
The Shawnee Trail by which they returned to Ohio passed
through or near the city of Elkins. A brave had pity on Mrs.
Peterson and gave her a pair of moccasins that she might
travel with greater comfort. She remained in captivity for
six years. Two hundred captives were rescued by General
Boquet, who attacked the Indian towns in Ohio in 1764. They
were returned to Fort Pitt. Mrs. Peterson was among the
number and from there returned to her home in Pendleton.
In 1788 Uriah Gandy sold to Christopher Armentrout
131 acres on Gandy Creek, Randolph County. The name was
spelled in the conveyance Hermantrout.

NOTE
The name "Eve Harper" appears on a list, dated 15 Nov 1764, of sixty white captives whom Henry Bouquet forced the Indians to deliver up at the Forks of the Muskingum. The captives were to be escorted to Fort Pitt by Capt. Charles Lewis of the Virginia Volunteers. At Fort Pitt, another list, dated 30 Nov 1764, includes "Eve Harper" among the "Captives taken by Indians in Augusta County, Virginia going home under the Care of Coll McNeill, Volunteers".
It is commonly supposed that this woman was Eve Elizabeth Harper.
A very few women returning from captivity had a child or two accompanying them. However, neither list indicates that Eve Harper brought back any children with her.
A list similar to the 30 Nov list, dated 3 Dec 1764 and prepared by Alexander McKee, appears in the Sir William Johnson Papers, Volume XI, pages 484-491. This list appears to have served as the basis for the list of names which appeared in early 1765 in various newspapers, such as The Pennsylvania Gazette and The Maryland Gazette. In addition to their names and the colony they came from (Pennsylvania or Virginia), for a number captives the year in which they were taken was indicated.

Let us accept the tradition that Eve Elizabeth Harper had been briefly married to a Mr. Moser.
Then who could Mr. Moser be?
Augusta County records tell us of only two individuals named Moser: Peter Moser and George Moser.
Peter Moser was definitely survived by a son named Adam. Records also refer to a Cathron or Cateren
Moser, who appears to have been the widow of Peter Moser.
So then, the only alternative left is that Eve Elizabeth Harper married George Moser.

he was under the Docter and Taking Care
of his Creeters in the mean time . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 0 0 [i.e., 4 pounds, 0 shillings, 0 pence]
Of course, it is inferred that George Moser's need for five weeks of nursing resulted from
the wounds he received from the Indians on 19 March 1758 and not from some earlier injury
or ailment.
Five weeks from March 19th is close to the date of the Fort Seybert massacre.
It is here postulated that George and his wife Eve Elizabeth removed to Seybert's fort for safety
and to recuperate.
As a consequence, he became one of the occupants executed by the Indians when they took
the fort, and she was taken captive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These next records show that George Moser had a daughter named Elizabeth who was
deceased by 23 May 1765. The administratrix of her estate was also named Elizabeth Moser.
If Eve Elizabeth Harper did marry George Moser, then the administratrix might well have been
none other than Eve Elizabeth Harper Moser, now the widow of George Moser. The deceased
daughter might have been a daughter born to Eve Elizabeth Harper Moser while in captivity,
and who died before her mother was released from captivity in (or before) November 1764.
Eve Elizabeth Harper Moser must have reported the death of her daughter, and a formal
probate process was performed.
Also shown is the record of Elizabeth Mouse choosing her guardian on 21 May, which was only
two days before Elizabeth Moser was appointed administratrix. Elizabeth Mouse had also been
captured at Fort Seybert. On the 30 Nov 1764 list of "Captives taken by Indians in Augusta
County, Virginia going home [from Fort Pitt] under the Care of Coll McNeill, Volunteers", she was
the twelfth female listed. Eve Harper was the thirteenth. The numbering may only be coincidental,
but perhaps it means they knew each other and stayed close together at Fort Pitt.
There was another grouping of South Branch ex-captives on this list: The first five females listed
were two Reager girls, who were either captured at Fort Seybert or were taken at about the same
time, followed by three Sivert (i.e., Seybert) girls where definitely captured at Fort Seybert. However,
we find no court orders pertaining to them in 1765.

REVIEW AND DISCUSSION
A family tradition states that Eve Elizabeth Harper first married a man named Moser. Accepting that as true, it has been posited here that it is most likely married George Moser. His death about five weeks after being wounded by Indians on 19 March 1758 fits reasonably well with his being at the Fort Seybert massacre on April 28th. A tradition states that Eve Elizabeth's husband was of tomahawked, and she was taken prisoner.
Another family tradition says she was a prisoner of the Indians for six years, which indicates she was released from captivity in 1764. That is why many suppose that the "Eve Harper" who appears on Col. Henry Bouquet's lists was actually Eve Elizabeth Harper (daughter of Philip Harper). Surely she identified herself to her rescuers. So it is a bit puzzling why her name was should be recorded as Eve Harper instead of Eve Moser, or Eve Elizabeth Moser, or even Eve Elizabeth Harper. Perhaps it was because she was aware that all the adult Mosers were deceased (Peter Moser having been killed at the same time that George Moser was wounded). Thus she may have felt that her closest living relatives were her parents and siblings, namely the Harpers.
But whether or not the Eve Harper in Bouquet's lists was indeed the Eve Elizabeth Harper Moser taken at Fort Seybert, it is not unreasonable to infer that the latter individual was the Elizabeth (or Eliza) Moser who on 23 May 1765 was appointed administratrix for the estate of Elizabeth (or Eliza) Moser, deceased daughter of the deceased George Moser. That is, she was acknowledged as George Moser's widow.
But where had George's daughter Elizabeth come from? Was she his daughter from a previous marriage, or had Eve Elizabeth been married to George Moser for, say, about a year--long enough to bear him a daughter. In the latter case she could only have been a few months old. In either case, the girl Elizabeth would have been known to the community. Then because the child's body was not found among those killed at Fort Seybert, the community concluded that she might had been taken captive along with Eve Elizabeth and the others. It was not until Eve Elizabeth returned at the end of 1764 and reported that little Elizabeth had perished during her captivity that her estate could be probated. One problem with this scenario is that a baby or very young child would have been considered a useless hindrance by the Indian captors and would have been quickly dispatched as they made their hasty retreat. Such an occurrence has been reported in some accounts of the Fort Seybert, although not in conjunction with Eve Elizabeth. Nor do any family traditions tell of Eve Elizabeth being a mother (or step-mother) at this time.
Another possibility is that Eve Elizabeth was pregnant (but not showing) when captured at Fort Seybert. She subsequently gave birth in captivity, but at some point during the next six years the girl died. Eve Elizabeth returned at the end of 1764 and reported that George Moser had had a daughter who had died in captivity. The girl, whose existence had been unknown to the community, was given the name Elizabeth.
Of course, none of the family traditions mention that Eve Elizabeth had given birth while a captive of the Indians. But that is the unexpected conclusion which seems to make the most sense based on the available records.

1816. They had lived together as husband and wife forty-eight years seven months
and three days."

Jacob Peterson (now called Senior) wrote his will on 16 May 1803.
Names mentioned in his will:
son Jacob Peterson
daughters Mary Peterson, Elizabeth Peterson, Sally Peterson, Eve Peterson, and Phebe Peterson
executor: son Jacob Peterson
witnesses: Conrad Carr, John Kornonn[?], C W Taylor, Aaron Welton, Joseph Hogbin
Jacob did not mention his wife Eve Elizabeth Harper Peterson in his will, although presumably she was still living.
Nor did Jacob mention his older son Philip Peterson.
Jacob's will was proved on 14 February 1815 by Caleb W Taylor and on 14 March by Aaron Welton and Joseph Hogbin.

In her 1989 book Valentin Pfost/Post, 1740-1800 of Hardy County (West) Virginia and some of his descendants, Doris Jean Post Poinsett states that on
29 Oct 1797 George Pfost and his wife, Elizabeth Pfosten, were communicants at North Mill Creek Church (Lutheran and Reformed) on the Reformed
side, Reverend Mr. Hofman. Also communicants were Monte [Martin] Pfost and his wife, whose name was recorded as "Sahra Pittersen Pfost",
suggesting she was newly married and the recorder made an error in her surname.

CHARLES WALKER DEAN.
Elsewhere in this volume there is set out at considerable length a his-
tory of the Dean family in Greene county. Charles Walker Dean, a build-
ing contractor at Cedarville, was born in the northwestern corner of New
Jasper township, this county, September 5, 1861, son of John Campbell and
Emily Louisa (Hagler) Dean, the latter of whom was born in that same
township on December 31, 1838, daughter of Samuel and Jane (Fudge)
Hagler, the former of whom was a son of Leonard and Mary Susan (Peter-
son) Hagler, both of whom were born in Hardy county, Virginia. The
Haglers are of Swiss descent. In 1817 Leonard Hagler and family came to
Greene county and settled on a farm of near five hundred acres at the
forks of Caesars creek. Leonard Hagler was an old-fashioned Methodist.
He and his wife were the parents of eight children, of whom Samuel was
the eldest. The latter carried on farming operations until his death. His
wife was a daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Fudge, who
had come to this part of Ohio from Botetourt county, Virginia, about the
time the Haglers had settled here.

Abraham and Phebe Peterson Bush settled in Fayette County, Ohio in 1811:
"ABRAHAM BUSH.
Abram Bush, farmer and ex-county commissioner, was born in
Fayette County, Ohio, November 10, 1816, and is a son of Abraham
and Phoeba Bush, both natives of Virginia, who immigrated to
Ohio, in the year 1810. He came to Fayette County, in 1811, and
cut the road through the wilderness from Washington Court House
to Sugar Creek, and the original farm still remains in the Bush
family; they had a family of seven children. ..."

the South Branch of the Potomac River. His education was such as the condition of
the country at that time afforded. ...
... He [JACOB PETERSON, JR.] was married to Elizabeth King, March 6, 1805, and
on the 12th day of March, 1806, she died. He was married again on the 12th of
March 1809, to Hannah Stucky. He was a man of spirit and energy, and desirous of
making life a success. He found that the institution of slavery was detrimental to his

business interests as a farmer. He was opposed to using slave labor. As free labor
could not successfully compete with slave labor, he resolved to emigrate to Ohio. Con-
sequently, in the year 1817, he, with his brother-in-law, Leonard Hegler, and their
families, emigrated to Greene County, Ohio, carrying their goods in two wagons, each
drawn by five horses. He drove his own team, while his wife rode horseback, carrying
one child in her arms, and another one, of three years, behind her. They brought with
them seventeen head of cattle, of a superior grade of stock to the Ohio cattle. They
were driven by Benjamin Stucky and Jonathan Ketteman. Mr. Ketteman is still liv-
ing in Xenia, at the time of this writing. They accomplished the journey, 350 miles,
in twenty-one days. They spent the first winter on Caesar Creek, Greene County, and
on the 12th day of March, 1818, he moved with his family to his farm on Anderson's Fork,
Chester Township, Clinton County. His farm, which comprised 350 acres, was purchased

accumulating a valuable property, consisting of 600 acres of land. He lived happily
with his wife forty-eight years nine months and six days. She died of pneumonia, the
16th day of December, 1857. In his declining years, he suffered with bodily afflictions,
having been thrown from a horse, he received injuries from which he never entirely
recovered. He also lost the sight of one of his eyes. Notwithstanding these afflictions;
he remained cheerful, and enjoyed the society of his children and friends. In the win-
ter of 1866-67, he made a visit to his daughter, living in Logan County; while return-
ing, he contracted a severe cold, which resulted in pneumonia. Arriving at Xenia, he
stopped at his son Abel's, where he rapidly grew worse, and died on the 3d day of Janu-
ary, 1867. He was the father of ten children, nine of who survive him. Elizabeth
Ann, the eldest, married John Nash; Abel, the eldest son, married Alivia A. Weaver;
Jesse, married Eleanor A. Weaver; Aaron, married Jane B. Wickersham; Amy, mar-

Peterson, who was born in Clinton county, daughter of Archibald and Mary
C. (McNair) Peterson, both of whom also were born in this state, the former
in Clinton county and the latter in Greene county, and whose last days were
spent in Clinton county. Archibald Peterson was a son of Jacob and Han-
nah Peterson, who had come over into this part of Ohio from Virginia and
settled at Anderson Forks, in Clinton county, where they got land and
established a home. Jacob Peterson and his wife were the parents of ten
children, of whom nine grew to maturity, namely: Abel, who for some
years farmed in Clinton county and then became a resident of Greene
county; Aaron, who lived in Indiana and in Iowa, spending his last days in
the latter state; Jesse, who became a resident of Greene county; Archibald,
father of Mrs. Anderson; Jacob, who made his home in Clinton county;
Abraham, who also made his home in Clinton county; Betsy Ann, who mar-

being the following: William A., who died in Alabama; Edwin, a car-
penter, who died at Wilmington, this state; Ida, who married Frank Ellis

The Line of Philip Peterson and Elizabeth Hagler
The line of Philip Peterson is not well documented in the Greene County history or any Peterson family histories.
Below is a compilation of data on his descendants.
Philip Peterson was the older son of Jacob Peterson Jr. and Eve Elizabeth Harper. He married Elizabeth Hagler, daughter of Sebastian Hagler and Eve Hire. (Elizabeth's brother Leonard Hagler married Philip's sister Mary Susannah Peterson.)
Philip first appeared in the personal property tax lists of Hardy County in 1791.
A 1791 deed mentioned Philip, his younger brother Jacob Jr., their father Jacob (husband of Eve Elizabeth Harper), and Philip's cousin Joseph, son of his uncle Martin Peterson:
Hardy County Deed Book v.2, p.327:
21 May 1791; Denny FAIRFAX by his attorney and brother Thomas Bryan MARTIN farmlets 70 acres to Jacob PETERSON on the South Branch Manor for 20 shillings per acre per year. Farmlet to said Jacob; his sons Jacob PETERSON Jr., Philip PETERSON and Joseph PETERSON son of his brother [Martin].
[source: Shuck, Larry G., Hampshire & Hardy Counties, [W]VA Abstracts (1996), p.139.]
Philip last appeared in the personal property tax lists of Hardy County in 1814, after which he moved to Caesars Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio.

Philip lived the rest of his life in Caesars Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio.
Philip Peterson wrote his will on 21 December 1839. In it he mentioned his wife Elizabeth Peterson, his youngest son Jacob Peterson, his son-in-law Alfred Ferguson, the five children of his deceased son Samuel, and "the rest of my children":

Susannah Sarah Petterson/Pitterson in the North Mill Creek Church records is presumably the Sarah Peterson who married William Mendenhall on 20 Nov 1817 in Greene Co., OH.
Eliz. Pitterson in the North Mill Creek Church records is presumably the Elizabeth Peterson who married John Harness on 14 Dec 1822 in Greene Co., OH.
There is no further record of Jesse (or Joseph) Peterson. Presumably he died young.
Three more children are identified in Philip's will: his son Samuel (deceased) who had five children, his youngest son Jacob Peterson, and a daughter who was married to Philip's son-in-law Alfred Ferguson. Greene County marriage records show that Sidney Peterson married Alfred Ferguson on 24 Apr 1834.
The family group sheet for Philip Peterson given on page 83 of "Peterson (Biedert) family record" compiled by Clyde S.Boots in 1979 [LDS film# 1036370 item 1] includes three additional daughters--Susannah (b. 14 Jan 1798), Mary (b.15 Sept 1806, and Emily (b. 2 Feb 1809)--for whom is no other information is given. The source of this information is attributed to Mrs. Martha Arnett of Pasadena, California. Mrs. Arnett also provided birth dates for the previously discussed children. It is not known where she obtained her information.
Below is a slightly modified list of the children of Philip Peterson and Elizabeth Hagler as given on page 83 of "Peterson (Biedert) family record". It incorporates data from the above North Mill Creek Church records with Mrs. Arnett's names and birth, marriage, and death dates. The marriages can also be found in Greene County, Ohio records.
Samuel - b. 2 Dec 1795 in Hardy Co., VA; m. Sarah Nash 18 Jan 1821 in Greene Co., OH; died in 1832.
Susannah - b. 14 Feb 1798 in Hardy Co., VA; speculative but likely: a Susanna Peterson married a Moses Lambert on 5 Feb 1824 in Greene Co., OH.
Susannah Sarah - b. 21 Sept. 1799 in Hardy Co., VA; a Sarah Peterson m. William Mendenhall on 20 Nov 1817 in Greene Co., OH.
Jesse - b. 2 May 1802 in Hardy Co., VA; No further record. Presumably he died young.
Elizabeth - b. 24 May 1804 in Hardy Co., VA; m. John Harness on 14 Dec 1822 in Greene Co., OH.
Mary - b. 15 Sept 1806 in Hardy Co., VA; note: Greene County marriage records show two Mary Petersons.
speculative but likely:
1. Mary Peterson m. Obediah Davis 3 Feb 1825 in Greene Co., OH, by Reuben Strong J.P.
(This Mary Peterson Davis died in Lyon Co., Kansas between 1870 and 1880.)
Some Davis researchers believe this Mary was the daughter of Philip Peterson and Elizabeth Hagler.
OR
speculative and less likely:
2. Mary Peterson m. William Rabourn 18 March 1831 in Greene Co., OH by Reuben Strong J.P.
(This Mary Peterson Raburn died between 1850 and 1880 probably in Lawrence Co., Ohio.)**
Emily - b. 2 Feb 1809 in Hardy Co., VA; speculation: a "Melley" Peterson m. James Wallace 20 Sept 1827 in Greene Co., OH.
Sidney - b.13 Nov 1811 in Hardy Co., VA; m. Alfred Ferguson on 24 Apr 1834 in Greene Co., OH; died 14 Mar 1904.
Jacob P. - b. 13 Mar 1814 in Hardy Co., VA; m. Ann Bobblett on 4 Nov 1834 in Greene Co., OH; died 16 Mar 1876.
**Note: In the 1830 census, the household of Philip Peterson shows only one female whose could have been a daughter. Presumably that female was Sidney, the youngest child, who did not marry until 1834. Thus it makes more sense that the Mary who married Obediah Davis in 1825 could be Philip's daughter. Moreover, if the Mary who married William Rabourn in 1831 were Philip's daughter, then in 1830 there ought to have been two young females in Philip's household instead of just one:

Obediah Davis is shown living in Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana in the U.S. census for 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860. (By 1870 he had moved to Lyon County, Kansas.)
Moses Lambert was still living in Caesars Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio in 1830. But by 1840 he too had moved to Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana, where he died in 1862. By 1850 Moses Lambert's son Philip Lambert was head of his own household in Warren Township, Marion County.
The three households were close neighbors in the 1850 census--Philip's house number being 516, Moses' 517, and Obediah Davis' 519.

Notes on Susanna Peterson (presumed daughter of Philip Peterson and Elizabeth Hagler):
Note: This lineage is not definitely verified. However, it seems likely given that in 1820 Philip Peterson was an appraiser of the estate of Joseph Lambert, who was the father of Moses Lambert. In addition, the oldest son of Moses Lambert was named Philip, suggesting that he may have been named for his maternal grandfather.

The reason I say presumably is that because there was a Martha "A." Lambert who married Joseph Harvey in Marion County, Indiana on 13 June 1854.
However, in the 1850 census Moses' daughter was listed as "Martha E. Lambert", and so it is presumed that she married George D. Plummer.

Ninety-Year-Old Neosho rapids Woman a Pioneer
Neosho Rapids, May 6, 1935
Tiny Mrs. Martha Davis Pigman, of Neosho rapids, who never in her
life weighed as much as one hundred pounds, at 90--"going
on 91"-tips the scales at 62 pounds and by standing up straight,
measures 4 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Yet her brown eyes sparkled as
she declared that time was when she had been several pounds
heavier than her present 62. "Although" she admitted, "I never
was a large woman. But my husband," she added proudly, "was
a 6-footer." Mrs. Pigman lives with her daughter Mrs. Frank Nine
and Mr. Nine in their pleasant comfortable home in the west part
of Neosho Rapids and talks interestingly of her early life and of
early days in Neosho Rapids. Mrs. Pigman was born in Marion
county, Indiana, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Obadiah Davis,
October 6, 1845. The Davises came to Kansas in 1860, traveling
in a covered wagon, four weeks on the road. She was married
two years later, in 1862, to Jefferson S Pigman, who had come to
Lyon county in 1855. Mr. Pigman ran a store at Columbia, three
miles southeast of Emporia. Then Mr. Pigman helped to start the
town of Neosho rapids, was its first postmaster, and lived near
and boosted for the town and community until his death in
1911. He and Mrs. Pigman were leaders in the Free Methodist
church, which for years was the strongest church in that
community, and they were interested workers for the old Free
Methodist seminary, which was burned years ago. Mrs. Pigman
has lived more then 75 of her 90 years in the Neosho Rapids
community. Mrs. Pigman is the head of the five living generations
of her family.

WILLIAM M. MENDENHALL.—This veritable pioneer of California, whose por-
trait appropriately finds a place in the “ History of Alameda County," was born in
Greene County, Ohio, April 22, 1823, and is the son of William and Sarah (Peterson)
Mendenhall. His forefathers were English, and came to this country with the famous
p.938
William Penn, to whom was granted what are now the States of Pennsylvania and
Delaware, in the year 1681; the ancestry of his mother was German. The father of
our subject was born in the year 1794, in Tennessee, and died December 19, 1870,
while his mother, who is now eighty-four years old, is with her son, Martin Menden-
hall, near Livermore, having passed, by fourteen years, man’s allotted span of three-
score years and ten. The spot where William M. Mendenhall first saw the light was
within five miles of the little town of Zeno[sic-Xenia], and there he passed the first seven
years of his existence, being surrounded by all of nature's most natural charms, and even
at that tender age, brought up to feel upon self-reliance as the foremost instinct. ...

The rest of this article is too long to include here, but it tells of William M. Mendenhall's
adventures in getting to and living in early California.
A more condensed version is given below:
A Memorial and Biographical History of Northern California
Lewis publishing Company, 1891 - California - 834 pages
p.706
WILLIAM M. MENDENHALL, one of the most prominent citizens of Livermore and a pioneer of California, was born April 22, 1823, in Greene County, Ohio, the son of William and Sarah (Peterson) Mendenhall, who removed to the Territory of Michigan in 1831 and followed farming amidst the dense forest. In 1845 the subject of this sketch, in company with twelve other adventurers, purchased pack-mules and an outfit, and on the 17th of August started on their perilous journey across the plains, by way of Forts Laramie, Bridger and Hall to the then almost unknown country of California, before it was brought into notoriety by Marshall’s gold dis-
p.707
covery. They encountered on their journey, of course, many privations and dificulties; were attacked by Indians many times; delayed by deep snows and snow-storms in the Sierra Nevada Mountains; were scantily provisioned at times, and suffered on account of hunger, thirst, etc.
They arrived at Sutter’s Fort on Christmas day, and after resting a short period there Mr. Mendenhall enlisted in a volunteer company of rangers for the purpose of fighting the Indians who were becoming very troublesome to the whites, and after killing several of them the troubles were temporarily suspended. Providing himself with a passport, he went to San Francisco, and then crossed the bay eastward to the locality where Oakland is now situated, and there engaged in getting out shingles, at the rate of $5 per 1,000; but in a short time, after war had been declared between the United States and Mexico, he joined the Federal forces under Fremont and served with him during the early part of the war, being discharged at Santa Clara in1847. About this time he purchased property in San José and followed ranching a year. This proving unsatisfactory, he sold out and moved to Oregon, but in a short time returned to California, locating in Contra Costa County, where he engaged in stock-raising for a number of years; and finally he moved into Alameda County and purchased 650 acres of land in the beautiful Livermore Valley,—where a large portion of the city of Livermore now stands,—and carried on farming until 1869, when he laid out the town of Livermore by converting 100 acres of his place into town lots. He gave twenty acres of land and the right of way to the Central Pacific Railroad Company. He has also been very generous in his donations to other business enterprises and to the religious denominations. To the Methodists, for example, he gave two lots and $100 cash for the erection of a church; to the Presbyterians, twelve lots, or two and one-eighth acres; for a grist-mill site, five acres; to John Aylward, a half block of land as an inducement to bring
water to the town, in 1871; for a college, land and the loan of money for a fine building, now owned and managed by Professor J. D. Smith, etc., etc. The grist-mill referred to was destroyed by fire in 1885. Mr. Mendenhall has also been one of the chief promoters of the Livermore Gas Company’s works, and is now president of that corporation. He has been in many ways identified with the local interests of the community. He is a member of the American Legion of Honor, Livermore Council, No. 1,070.
He was married in Santa Clara, April 18, 1847, to Miss Mary A. Allen. This was the first marriage of “ Americans ” south of the Sacramento River in the State of California. They have had ten children, of whom nine are living, namely: James M., Elizabeth, Emma, Ella D., David, Archer, William, Aswold, Ascny and Etta.

Moses Sanders, farmer, Jamestown, is a son of William and
Elizabeth (Lynders) Sanders, who were born and married in North
Carolina. They came to Ohio about 1801, and located some twelve
miles south of Xenia, where they remained about two years, when
Ebenezer Thomas offered to trade a farm of sixty acres, situated in
sight of the present village of Jamestown, for a horse. The ex-
change was made, and in 1803 he removed to the said farm, where
he lived the remainder of his life, dying July 3, 1861, aged eighty-
five years. Mrs. Sanders died March 30, 1879, aged about seventy-
nine years. There were twelve children of this family, all of whom
lived to maturity, and all married, except William, who died at the
age of twenty-three years. Seven are living at this writing, Moses
being the youngest of the family. Mr. Sanders owned about two
hundred and eighty-five acres of land at his death; had sold a part
of what he had formerly owned. Our subject was born December
5, 1820; was married, January, 20, 1847, to Miss Elizabeth Harness,
daughter of John and Elizabeth (Peterson) Harness. She is a de-
scendant of John Jacob Peterson, who was born in Germany [sic-Switzerland], Jan-
uary 7, 1706. They have four children, John W., Sarah J., James
H., and Asa C., two of whom are married. He has a farm of three
hundred acres, well improved, situated one mile southwest of James-

town, on which he lives, also a farm of one hundred acres, two
miles east of the same village. He and his wife are members of
the Baptist Church. Their parents were members of the same
church. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity; also a mem-
ber of the Masonic Beneficial Association, and is well and favora-
bly known. They are both exemplary Christians.

Mrs. Sanders was born January 18, 1820, in New

death taking place in 1883[sic]. Both were consistent

members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They
were natives of Virginia, whence they emigrated
with their respective parents to Ohio, the two fam-
ilies settling in New Jasper Township and becoming
well-to-do, building up good homesteads from the
wilderness. Mr. and Mrs. Harness were the parents
of five children and one son died in the army dur-
ing the Civil War. The remaining four are still
living, married and settled in comfortable homes.

OBITUARY.
-----------
Elizabeth Harness Sanders, widow
of the late Moses Sanders, and
daughter of John and Elizabeth
Peterson Harness, was born near
the banks of the south fork of
Casearcreek, in New Jasper town
ship, Greene county, O., Jan. 16,
1829. She was the last member of
a family of two daughters and three
sons. In 1847 she was married to
Moses Sanders, of near Jamestown,
Ohio, and to this union were born
one daughter and three sons, all of
whom are still living. The de-
ceased united with the Caesarcreek
Baptist church in 1847, and was a
consistent member, her Christian
character being always in evidence
to her relatives and friends. Her
hands were ever open to the poor,
and the needy she never turned
away from her door empty handed.
Mrs. Sanders’ last illness was of
a brief period, scarcely three weeks.
Realizing that the end was near,
she called us all to her bedside and
bade us farewell, admonishing us
to be good. A week later disease
had accomplished its work. Under
the shadow of all her children, at
the dawn of the morning on the
25th day of July, 1911, after human
hands had done all in their power
to relieve the pain, the silver cord
was loosened and the golden bowl
was broken, and her spirit took its
flight, rounding out a good and
useful life of 82 years, six months
and ten days, less than a month
older than her sister Nancy, who
passed over some five years ago.
Card of Thanks—We wish to thank
our relatives and friends for their
kindness and assistance during the
sickness and at the time of the
death of our dear old mother, and
to the members of the grand old
Masonic Order, the light of the
world. We feel like uncovering
our heads for the beautiful adage
emblem of flowers which they
furnished her as a last token of
sympathy and respect.
J. H. Sanders and Family.

DEATH OF MRS. W. E. DAVIS
-----
Highly Respected Lady of Caesar-
creek Called Home.
-----
This morning at 11 o'clock death
came to Sidney, wife of Mr. W. E.
Davis, who resides close to Maple
corner in Caesarcreek township, about
five miles south of Xenia.
The deceased had for some time
been afflicted with cancer. About a
year ago an operation was performed
on her in the hope of relieving her,
but it proved unavailing and she
continued to sink, suffering greatly.
She was unconscious for several days
previous to her death.
Mrs. Davis was born in Greene
county on the farm on which she
died and had lived there almost her
entire life. She was a daughter of
the late Jacob Peterson. She was a
member of the Baptist church and
was a woman highly respected by all
who knew her.
She leaves a husband and three
children. The children are Mrs.

LAST SLEEP COMES
TO MRS. SHAMBAUGH
----------------
She Was Stricken With Apoplexy At Her Home
On North Galloway Street This Morn-
ing and Expired in Few Hours.
----------------
[column 5]
The most profound sorrow will
be felt by the many friends of Mrs.
Maria J. Shambaugh upon learning
that she passed away about one
o’clock this afternoon at her home
on North Galloway street. Her
death came with startling sudden
ness and it will be difficult to rea-
lize that she will mingle wilh her
friends on earth no more.
Mrs. Shambaugh and her daugh-
ter-in-law, Mrs. Jacob Shambaugh,
nee Cora Stuckey, had been resid
ing together. Last evening the
deceased felt better than usual and
upon arising this morning went
about her household duties, but
about 6:30 o’clock complained of
feeling dizzy. He daughter-in-law
went to her assistance and did
what she could for her, but upon
gaining her bed Mrs. Shambaugh
became unconscious and remained
in that condition until she calmly
slept away. Two physicians were
called immediately and did all that
was possible, but from the first
they could give no hope. Death
was caused by a stroke of apoplexy.
[column 6]
The deceased was the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob P. Peterson.
She was bom near Maple Corner
in Caesarcreek township and would
have been 62 years of age on the
6th of June. She was a life long
resident of this county. Her hus-
band was Charles Shambaugh, who
enlisted during the Civil war and
died while in the service. For the
past ten or twelve years she had
made her home in this city, resid-
ing most of the time with Capt.
and Mrs. L. H. Whiteman.
There is but one surviving child,
Mr. Jacob Shambaugh. The de-
ceased was a sister of Mrs. L. H.
Whiteman, of Xenia, and of Mrs.
McKay, of Streator, Ill. Phillip
Peterson, of Pueblo, Col., is a
brother.
Mrs. Shambaugh was a member
of the old Baptist church. She was
a woman of many fine traits of
character and to those who knew
her best her death will bring the
greatest sadness.
The arrangements for the fu-
neral will be announced to-morrow.

Lydia Peterson's paternal uncle James Wilson Babb and his family had settled near Reedsburg, Sauk County, Wisconsin in 1845.
Jesse Peterson and family evidently lived near them for a few years in the 1850's.

On 30 June 1858 Jesse Peterson appeared before William Miles at Reedsburg to prove the will of Thomas Babb Sr. of Greene County, Ohio, to which he had been a witness when the will had been written on 29 March 1848. This Thomas Babb Sr. was Lydia Peterson's paternal grandfather.
Jesse and Lydia's daughter Isabinda "Callie" Peterson was born 21 February 1860 in Wisconsin, presumably in Sauk County.
According to a 1909 obituary of Lydia Babb Peterson (given below), "She, with her companion and family emigrated to the west the first time in the fall of 1854, landing in Wisconsin where they lived until 1862 when they returned to the East."
Based on the deaths and burials of "L. R. Della" and "Sarah M. A.", Jesse Peterson and family returned to live in Greene County during the early 1860's.
That they returned to Greene County from Wisconsin is also supported by a 1863 Civil War draft registration record, which showed a "Jessee Peterson" living in Caesar Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio on July 1, 1863:
U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865
No. 231
[Class I comprises all persons subject to military duty between the ages of twenty and thirty-five, and all unmarried persons subject to do military duty above the age of thirty-five and under the age of forty-five. Class II comprises all other persons subject to do military duty.]
SCHEDULE II.--CONSOLIDATED LIST of all persons of CLASS II, subject to do military duty in the Seventh Congressional District, consisting of the Counties of Franklin
Madison Clark and Green State of Ohio, enumerated during the month June, 1863, under direction of
James A. Wilcox, Provost Marshal.
Name: Jessee Peterson Jr [Jesse Peterson Sr was presumably his uncle, who was a son of Jacob Peterson and Hannah Stuckey.]
Birth Year: abt 1824
Place of Birth: Virginia [sic-should be Ohio, presuming this is indeed Jesse Peterson, son of Samuel Peterson]
Age on 1 July 1863: 39
Race: White
Residence: Caesar Creek Tp, Greene, Ohio
Congressional District: 7th
Class: 2
Citing again the above-mentioned 1909 obituary of Lydia Peterson (given below), "[They] returned again in 1866 to this country [i.e. the West], which was talked so much about at that day and age, this time landing in Linn county [Kansas]." By 6 November 1866, Jesse Peterson and family had located near Pleasanton. Mary Ann Babb Boots, the sister Jesse's wife Lydia Babb Peterson, was the wife of Lewis Boots of Clinton County, Ohio. The 1870 census shows Lewis Boots' family also living in Linn County, Kansas. It may well be that the Peterson and Boots families had traveled to Kansas together. They had been preceded by the family of Lydia and Mary Ann's maternal uncle Sampson Babb, who had settled in Scott Township, Linn County, Kansas on 3 May 1859.
Jesse Peterson died 8 February 1869 in Linn County, Kansas.

LYDIA PETERSON.
------------
Another One of Linn County's Earl-
iest Pioneers Passes Away.
Lydia Babb was born in Clinton
county, Ohio, February 15th, 1820,
where she grew to womanhood and
was married to Jesse Peterson Feb.
26th, 1846. To this union eight
children were born, four of whom
died in infancy. She, with her
companion and family emigrated to
the west the first time in the fall of
1854, landing in Wisconsin where
they lived until 1862 when they re-
turned to the East. Not satisfied
there, after having lived in the
West, returned again in 1866 to this
country, which was talked so much
about at that day and age, this
time landing in Linn county, where
she spent most of the remainder of
her life. In 1868 her companion
passed over that Great Divide where
sorrows are no more. Since 1884
she has spent most of her time
among her children. It was in the
early part of her life, too, that she
was converted and gave her heart to
God, remaining a true follower of
Christ who is so just and merciful
unto those who serve him well ; she
was ever ready to speak and work
in behalf of her Master, whom she
loved and worshipped above all
other things.
The writer, many times, has
heard her say she was ready to go
at any time the Lord might say,
"Well Done Thou Good and Faith-
ful Servant, Come up Higher."
About three weeks ago she was
taken ill with the La Grippe, which
disease claims so many victims as
its own, especially at such a ripe old
age as this dear old soul was per-
mitted to live.
Last Wednesday morning, March
10th, 1909, at 6:00 o'clock, that
still small voice whispered: “Be-
hold the Bridegroom Comes” and
she laid down all things mortal and
put on those of immortality beyond
the skies. The deceased was at the
[top of next column]
home of her daughter, Mrs. L. G.
Blanden at Greeley, Kansas, where
she had been making her home for
two years previous to her death
She leaves four children, Mrs. L.
G. Blanden, Greeley, Kansas, Mrs.
Frank Alyea, Kingfisher, Okla-
homa; Alonzo Peterson, Kooi, Wy-
oming and A. C. Peterson, of this
place, to mourn hor loss, besides
hosts of other relatives, as she was
the grandmother of 32 children and
great-grandmother of seventeen
She will also be sadly missed by
her many friends,
Homer Peterson, a grandson of
deceased, accompanied by Chas.
Siron, went to Greeley Thursday,
March 11th, and brought the re-
mains to the home of A. C. Peter-
son, where the funeral was held
from the home Friday at 10 a. m.,
conducted by Rev. Mortermer, of
Pleasanton, after which the remains
were conveyed to the Richland cem-
etery and laid beside those of her
companion.
Shall we meet beyond the rive,
Where the surges cease to roll ;
Where in all the bright forever
Shall we meet the many loved ones,
Who were torn from our embrace ;
Shall we listen to their voices
And behold them face to face.
Shall we meet with Christ our Savior,
When he comes to claim his own ;
Shall we know his blessed favor
And sit down upo his throne.

OBITUARY.
---------
Mary Peterson, daughter of
Samuel and Sarah [Nash] Peterson, was
born in Caesarcreek township,
Greene county, O., May 4th, A.
D. 1822, departed this life March
31st, 1908, aged 85 years, 10
months and 27 days. She was a
member of a family of ten chil-
dren, consisting of five half
brothers and sisters, of which
only two survive her, James A.
Jones, of Greene county, O., and
Jacob Jones, of Illinois.
In the year of 1848 she was
united in marriage to Joseph
Ruddick. To this union were
born six children, four boys and
two girls. John J., of Boston,
Mass., Levi E., of Pilkinton,
Virgina; Samuel and Abner, of
Xenia, O., ; Mrs. John Hogan, of
Dayton, O., and Mrs. Robert
Weaver, south of Xenia. She is
also survived by sixteen grand-
children and seven great grand-
children. In 1860 the Lord saw
fit to remove her companion, and
for 48 years she had trod life’s
journey alone, always trusting
her Heavenly Father for guid-
ance and protection. Her great-
est comfort and blessing of this
life were her children. She was
a kind and devoted mother,
whose loss they all mourn,
for mother’s place can never be
filled. But how glad our hearts
are when we think and know she
has passed to the better home,
where sorrow and separation
never come, and is beckoning us
to follow.
At the time of her death she
held membership with the Zoar
M. E. church, of which she has
been a consistent member for a
number of years. Her devotion
to her family was the distinction
and the grandeur of her soul,
which has now passed to a heav-
enly reward that was her true
heritage. Yet when it comes the
appointed time to mourn mother’s
death, words have never been in
vented to fully express the
strength of a mother’s love—the
holiest affection on earth.
