Preface
Most of the information on this Nash family has previously been presented in
Nash, Ralph G. Nash: a Family Genealogy. Springfield, Va.: R.G. Nash, 1983.

It is the purpose of this discussion to provide addition records about the Nash family during its time in Pennsylvania and also to provide information about William Ward, whom it is supposed was Nathan Nash's father-in-law.

The above two references are used as the starting point for the genealogy of Nathan Nash. Below is a summary of that information, which is here accepted as more or less true:
Nathan Nash was a son of Edward Nash. They were born in Maryland.
Nathan Nash was married to Mary Jane (Polly) Ward.
The Ward family came from England.
The Nash family are descendants from "Erin's Green Isle." [i.e., Ireland]
Nathan’s father Edward Nash and Mary Jane Ward’s father were soldiers in the Revolutionary War.
Nathan brought his family from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Greene County, Ohio in 1817.
Nathan and Polly Nash later moved to Licking county and settled on a farm in the vicinity of Newark, where they spent the remainder of their lives. They were the parents of ten children, William, James, Thomas, Hugh. John, Nathan, Sarah, Margaret, Nancy and Maria.
Notes on some boundary changes to certain Pennsylvania counties and townships:
Prior to 1788, Bedford County contained a township called Dublin.
Shirley Township was erected from Dublin Township about 1780.
Humtingdon County was created on September 20, 1787, principally from the northern part of Bedford County.
Shirley Township and part of Dublin Township became part of this new county of Huntingdon.
Springfield Township in Huntingdon County was erected in December, 1790 from Shirley and Dublin Townships,
Tax records show that an individual named William Ward lived in Dublin Township, Bedford County as early as 1775, then in Dublin County, Huntingdon County beginning in 1788, and finally in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County beginning in 1791. Presumably he never moved, but instead the county and township boundaries changed around him.
In the 1784, the household of William Ward of Dublin Township, Bedford County was listed as containing "6 whites".
Based on the fact that William Ward was the only Ward living in the same township as the Nashes, and that William had several females in his household in 1790, it is supposed that William Ward was most likely the father of the Mary Jane (Polly) Ward who married Nathan Nash.
Union Township was set off from Hopewell, another original township of Huntingdon County, in June, 1791. At that time Union included the townships of Tod, Cass, and Carbon,—the entire Trough Creek Valley.
Thus in 1794, the southeast side of Union Township bordered the northwest side of Springfield and Shirley Townships. As will be discussed more fully discussed later, in 1794 an Edward Nash (presumably Nathan's father) and a John Nash (presumably a relative of some sort) obtained adjoining land warrants. The survey for John's warrant indicated that his land was "Situate in Springfield Township", whereas the survey for Edward's warrant, which adjoined the north side of John's, indicated that his land was "Situate in Union Township".

HUNTINGDON COUNTY
The 1790 census of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania did not identify the inhabitants by their townships.
William Ward's household was listed as having 1 free white male over the age of 16, 2 free white males under the age of 16, and 5 free white females.
Also listed in the 1790 census of Huntingdon County was a John Nash, whose household consisted of 1 free white male over 16 and 1 free white female. Unlike William Ward, however, this John Nash has not been found in any earlier township records of Huntingdon and Bedford Counties.
John Nash seems to be missing from the 1791 Springfield Township assessment, but he appears in the Springfield Township assessment in 1792 and in subsequent years.
In one list for the 1793 return of property for Springfield Township, Edward Nash appeared for the first time. He appears to be listed in the "Single Free Man" category.
In 1794, John Nash and Edward Nash obtained adjoining warrants for 400 acres of land in Huntingdon County. John's was in Springfield Township while Edward's was in Union township.

Based on information shown in some adjacent surveys, the adjoining surveys of John and Edward Nash appear to be located southwest of Cassville--near Great Trough Creek where it joins Little Trough Creek. This area is near the present-day border of Cass and Todd Townships.
In the 1797 tax assessment of Springfield Township, Edward Nash was listed as a married Freeman.
"Nathen" Nash made his appearance for the first time as one of the Freemen.
Note: There is a note attached to the name above Edward, which may also refer to Edward. The note said "Gone away Since the Return 1796". The two names immediately following Edward also said "Gone away":

In "A List of the names and Valuation of the Township Springfield for the year 1798", "Nathan Nash" was listed as "married" in the list of "Single Freemen". Edward Nash's name is missing in 1798.
In addition, in July 1798, Congress authorized the first direct tax by the United States government. John Nash, Nathaniel Nash, and William Ward were listed, but Edward Nash was not.

Note: It would appear that Nathan(iel) Nash lived on a portion of George Stanes' land survey of 396 acres and 155 perches.
Adjoining the west side of George Stanes' survey was the survey of John Cromwell.
At the southwestern end of Cromwell's survey is a stream labelled "Up Elliots Run".
A present-day stream called "Elliot Run" flows SE into Sideling Hill Creek just NW of Maddensville. The upstream, northwestern half of Elliot Run is in present-day Clay Township, whereas the southeastern, downstream half is in present-day Springfield Township. Just downstream of Maddensville, Sideling Hill Creek joins with Little Aughwick Creek to become Aughwick Creek, which meanders northward, past Shirleysburg, to join the Juniata River.
Thus George Stanes survey, on which Nathan Nash lived, appears to have been located northwest of Maddensville, somewhere along the waters of Elliot Run. Near the head of Elliot Run is the head of a branch of Spring Creek which flows north and then east to become Three Springs Creek near the Town of Three Springs.

(Also adjoining George Stanes' survey were two surveys for his brother Daniel Stanes, one of which adjoined the northeast side of Cromwell's survey.

* A Few Degrees of Separation *
* Although there is no direct evidence to connect Nathan(iel) Nash and William Ward, here is a chain *
* which demonstrates that they lived close enough for such a connection to be feasible: *
* According to the U.S. Direct Tax of 1798, Nathaniel Nash lived on 100 acres which were owned by *
* George Stanes. Nathaniel’s “adjoining Proprietor” was Daniel Stanes, George's brother. *
* Daniel Stanes had a daughter Belinda Stains who married Joseph Hess. *
* Joseph Hess was the son Peter Hess. *
* In 1798 William Ward owned 50 acres. William’s “adjoining Proprietor” was Peter Hess. *

In 1799 Edward Nash made his last appearance tax assessment of Springfield Township, Nathan does not appear to have been listed. If he had gone after 1796, had Edward returned? Or could Edward's name actually have referred to Nathan?
Nathan Nash was again listed in 1800 tax assessment of Springfield Township, It appears that a line was crossed through which may have stated "Nash Edward & Nathan".
In the 1800 census of Springfield, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, the household of Nathaniel Nash consisted of 1 free white male under 10, 1 free white male age 16 thru 25 (presumable Nathan), and 1 free white female age 16 thru 25 (presumably Mary Jane):

Nathan Nash and William Ward made their last appearance in the Springfield tax assessments in 1804.
John Nash made his last appearance in 1805.
Thus ceased the annual tax records by which these individuals had been tracked.
There are no land or probate records in Huntingdon County which mention John Nash, Nathan Nash, or William Ward.
Nathan Nash is next found in the 1810 census of Washington Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:
1810
Name: Nathan Nash
Home in 1810 (City, County, State): Washington, Fayette, Pennsylvania
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 3

Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1
Number of Household Members Under 16: 6
Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
Number of Household Members: 8
Coincidentally, a William Ward is also listed in the 1810 census of Washington Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania:
1810

Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1
Number of Household Members Under 16: 4
Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
Number of Household Members: 7
However, there is no other evidence which can show if this individual is the William Ward who previously had lived in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County.
A John Nash is also listed in in the 1810 census of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, but in German Township, not Washington Township:
1810
Name: John Nash

Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over: 1
Number of Household Members Under 16: 4
Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
Number of Household Members: 7
As with the case for William Ward, there is no other evidence which can show if this individual is the John Nash who previously had lived in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County.
There are no tax, land, or probate records in Fayette County which mention a John Nash, Nathan Nash, or a William Ward. There is only the 1810 census.
Nathan Nash is next found in the 1820 census of Xenia Township, Greene County, Ohio:

THE NASH FAMILY AFTER 1820
It was shortly after 1820 that the children of Nathan Nash and Mary Jane Ward began to go their separate ways.
Sarah and William married in 1821, James in 1826, and Hugh and Rachel in 1827. All of these marriages took place in Greene County.
Of the ten Nash children, only Sarah and Hugh remained in Greene County for the rest of their lives.
Personal property tax records of Greene County, Ohio show a Nathan Nash in Xenia Township in 1826, 1827, and 1829, and then in Miami Township in 1829. There is no Nathan Nash found in Greene County in the 1830 census, nor is he found in any tax records in 1830 or thereafter.
Battle's History of Logan County and Ohio (1880) and Broadstone's History of Greene County, Ohio (1918) both indicated that Nathan and Polly Nash later moved to Licking county, and Broadstone specified that they settled on a farm in the vicinity of Newark, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
Coincidentally, Newark township was where an Edward Nash and others from Washington Co., Pennsylvania settled in 1802:

p.536
In October of this year (1802) quite a little colony came from Washington county, Pennsylvania, and settled in Newark and Cherry valley.
These were Abraham Johnson, Abraham Wright, William B. Gaw, James Petticord, Edward Nash, Carlton Belt, Benedict Belt, Acquilla Belt,
Little John Belt, Black John Belt. These Belts were also joined in a few years by Long John Belt. ...
Deed records indicate that this Edward Nash's wife was named Allethea. Later deeds show Edward Nash as grantee to land transactions in Utica, Washington Township, Licking Co. Tax records for 1838 and 1840 place Edward Nash in Burlington Township, which adjoins Washington Township on the latter's west side. However, the 1840 census still places him in Washington Township (along with a younger John B. Nash).
A Nathan Nash first appears in the tax records of Licking County in 1830, at which time he resided in Washington Township. He is listed there again in 1831, 1833, and 1834.
The 1830 census of Licking County, Ohio also lists a Nathan Nash living in Washington Township; however his age is listed as between 30 and 40 years, indicating he would be too young to be the Nathan Nash who married Mary Jane Ward. In the 1840 census, presumably it is this Nathan Nash who is shown living in Burlington Township, where Edward Nash had property. Note, however, that Nathan's age in 1840 is still between 30 and 40.
The 1840 census of Liberty Township, Logan County, Ohio lists another Nathan Nash, who was age 50 to 60. Also in his household were 1 male, age 5-10; 1 male, age 10-15; 1 female, under 5; 1 female, age 5-10; and 1 female, age 40-50. If this Nathan's age were 60, then his age would be close to but still a bit short of the best estimated age of the Nathan Nash who married Mary Jane Ward. Moreover, there are a number of young children in this household who could not be children of Nathan and Mary Jane; nor is it likely they would be grandchildren. There is no further information about this Nathan Nash of Liberty Township, Logan Co., Ohio.
During the latter half of the 1830's and into the early 1840's, there were four more Nash marriages in Greene of Clinton County, Ohio: Thomas in 1835 and Catherine in 1836, both in Greene County; John in 1838 and Maria in 1841, both in Clinton County.
Thus nine of the ten children of Nathan Nash and Mary Jane Ward were married in either Greene or Clinton County, Ohio between 1821 and 1841. The one child yet to be accounted for is Nathan Nash Junior.
The 1840 census of Xenia, Greene County, Ohio lists an "N" Nash who might be Nathan Nash Jr. The Greene County histories by Broadstone (1918) and by George F. Robinson (1902) do say that Nathan was struck by lightning in 1843 while working as a plasterer in Xenia. "N" Nash's age in 1840 was 30 to 40. Also in his household were 2 males under 5, 1 female 5 to 10, and 1 female 20 to 30. This strongly suggests that "N" had a wife and family, although no marriage record has been found.

The Connections(?)
Harriet Barkley, daughter of Ebenezer Barkley, married Martin Neher 3 Nov 1825 in Licking County, Ohio.
Rebecca Jewell, daughter of Jonathan Jewell, married Nathan Nash. They resided near Utica [in Washington Twp], Licking Co., Ohio, for many years, and where Mrs. Nash died in an early day.
The only Nathan Nash in Licking County in 1850 lived in Monroe Township, and his wife's name was Elizabeth. [Note: Online genealogies identify her as Elizabeth Moore] (This Nathan Nash was born in Pennsylvania about 1810. In 1856 he and his family were living in the town of Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa. In 1885 he lived in Bloomfield Township, Mitchell County, Kansas, where he died in 1886.)
Speculation: Could Elizabeth have been the second wife of the Nathan Nash who supposedly married Rebecca Jewell?
Some old online posts state that Harriet Barkley Neher had a sister named Mary Ann. There was an apparently widowed Mary Ann Nash whose daughter Harriet Nash Married Henry S. Mintle in Warren County, Ohio in 1848. The 1850 census shows Henry S. and Harriet Mintle, along with Mary Ann Nash and her other children Augustus P. and John F Nash, living in Wayne Township, Warren Co., Ohio. Wayne Township is only about 15 miles from the town of Xenia in Greene County, where Nathan Nash was killed by lightning in 1843. Based perhaps on that proximity, the individuals who made the posts believe that it was Nathan Nash, son of Nathan Nash and Mary Jane Ward, who married Mary Ann (Barkley) Nash.
In 1860, the Mintles, including A[ugustus] P Nash, lived in Warren Co., Indiana (although Mary Ann Nash is missing). In 1870, the Mintles and Nashes lived in Wayne Township, Stark Co., Indiana. In 1880, Mary Ann Nash lived with her granddaughter and her husband, Flora B. and Leonadas E. Fidler, in the town Quincy, Miami Township, Logan County, Ohio. Mary Ann Nash died in 1893 at St. Paris, Johnson Township, Champaign Co., Ohio.
Mary Ann Nash's presumed sister Harriet (Barkley) Neher lived in Quincy, Logan Co., Ohio in 1850 through 1857. In 1880, Harriet Neher lived in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and J. W. Millett, in St. Paris, Johnson Township, Champaign Co., Ohio. She died 19 Jul 1897 in the town of Quincy, Logan Co., Ohio.
It is not known if the individuals who made the old posts possess additional information which confirms that Mary Ann Nash was the sister of Hariet Barkley Neher, and more importantly, confirms that Mary Ann (Barkley) married Nathan Nash (d.1843 in Xenia), who was the son of Nathan Nash and Mary Jane Ward.

Thomas Nash – b. 7 May 1815 in PA ; m. Isabella Boothe 5 Mar 1835 in Greene Co., OH ; d. 1 May 1865 in Monroe Township, Butler Co., Iowa
Maria Nash – b. 14 Feb 1817 in PA ; m. Clayton Haines 8 Sept 1841 in Clinton Co., OH ; d. 16 Dec 1914 in Greenfield, Highland Co., Ohio
Nathan Nash – b. est. 1808-10 or 1813-14 in PA ; d. 17 Aug 1843 in Xenia, Green Co., Ohio (He was struck by lightning.)
Note above that there is a four and a half year gap between the dates of birth for Rachel and John, a nearly three year gap between Catherine and Thomas, and also that the dates of birth for John and Catherine are too close.
John's date of birth has been calculated backward from his age at his date of death, as recorded in his death record.
Catherine's dates of birth and death are taken from her headstone.
Nothing certain is known about the date of birth of Nathan Nash Jr. Probably he was born between Rachel and John, or between Catherine and Thomas. One reference says Nathan was "killed by lightning while at work as a plasterer August 17, 1843, at the house of Joshua Wright, East Second street, Xenia". In addition, there was an "N Nash" listed in the 1840 census of Xenia (the town of), Greene County. His age range was "30 & under 40", indicating he was born between 1800 and 1810. Accepting that "N Nash" was indeed Nathan Nash Jr., then he was born probably after Rachel but definitely before the 1810 census was taken. [Note: With regard to the 1810 United States census, federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day, which was the first Monday [the 6th] in August for 1810. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information he collected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day.
(source: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/United_States_Census,_1810_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records) )]
Since the dates of birth for John and Catherine are too close, it must be assumed that one of them is incorrect. By setting Nathan Jr.'s date of birth around 1808-1809, the only remaining large gap between births is the one between Catherine and Thomas. Therefore, it is conditionally concluded here that Catherine must have been born a year or so later than the date which appears on her headstone, 29 May 1812. Giving Catherine a later date of birth creates a reasonable time gap between the births of John and Catherine.
Below the census records are shown with the children identified as discussed above:
In 1800 census, the household of Nathan(iel) Nash had one child, a male under the age of 10. He would have to be William Nash.
In 1810 census, the household of Nathan Nash had six children, 4 males and 2 females;
Name: Nathan Nash
1810 census – Washington Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania:

Males - 26 thru 44 : 1 Nathan Nash - the father
Females - Under 10: 2 Sarah, Rachel
Females - 26 thru 44: 1 Mary Jane Ward Nash - the mother
**Accepting that Nathan was the fourth son born to Nathan, then he must have been born before the 1810 census was taken.
In the 1820 census, the household of Nathan Nash contained ten children, 6 males and 4 females:
(Note that James Nash (age 17) fits into two age categories, and so is counted twice.)

JOHN R. NASH.
Though now in the ninetieth year of his age, John R. Nash, one of the real "old-timers" of Greene county and a substantial retired farmer living on his old home place in Xenia township, on rural route No. 8 out of Xenia, where he has made his home for nearly sixty years, is a remarkably well preserved old gentleman, retaining his faculties in an astonishing degree for one of his years, his memory clear and distinct. his sight so clear that he is still able to read without glasses and his hearing practically unimpaired. Mr. Nash was born in Greene county and during the long period that has elapsed since he began to retain a recollection of events he has been a witness to some amazing developments in the manner of living and is able to tell many interesting stories of the days of the earlier settlers in the county.
John R. Nash was born in a little log stable on a farm two miles south
p.181
of Cedarville, in this county, May 25, 1828, and was cradeled in a sugar trough hewed out of a log. His parents, Hugh and Rebecca (Graham) Nash, were members of two of the early families to settle in this part of the county. Hugh Nash having been a son of Nathan and Polly (Ward) Nash, who drove through with their family from Washington county, Pennsylvania, and settled in Greene county about the time the county became organized as a civic unit and here established their home. They later moved to Licking county and settled on a farm in the vicinity of Newark, where they spent the remainder of their lives. They were the parents of ten children, William, James, Thomas, Hugh, John, Nathan, Sarah, Margaret, Nancy and Maria. The family was very poor in world's goods and it is a matter of tradition in the family that it was not uncommon for the children to have to go barefooted even after snow had fallen. Hugh Nash grew up in this county and lived here continuously save for a couple of years spent in Warren county, Illinois. Upon his return from there he settled in Xenia township and there spent his last days, his death occurring at the age of sixty-five years. His widow survived him for years, she having been eighty-there years of age at the time of her death. They were members of the Associate Reformed church, but after the union of that church and the Associate church became affiliated with the United Presbyterian church. Hugh Nash was originally a Whig, but upon the formation of the Republican party became affiliated with the latter party. He and his wife had two children, the subject of this sketch having a sister, Mary, widow of John Miller, of Columbus, Ohio.

JOHN NASH, farmer; P. O., East Liberty; was born Sept. 22, 1811, in Westmoreland Co., Pa; he is a son of Nathan, who was a son of Edward; they were born in Maryland. John emigrated to this State with his parents in 1817, to Green Co., where they remained a short time; they then moved to Licking Co. His mother's name was Mary Jane Ward, before marriage, whose family came from England. The Nash family are descendants from "Erin's Green Isle." John's grandparents on both sides, were soldiers in the war of the Revolution. John Nash, our subject, began life poor, his mother dying when he was very young. The family was broken up and he launched out to do for himself, and soon became innured to privation and severe toil. When he acquired means, he purchased a team and teamed several years to Cincinnati, before the era of railroads. In Dec. 27, 1838, he was married to Elizabeth A. Peterson, born in Hardy Co., Va., Dee. 13, 1800, daughter of Jacob and Hannah Stoakly [sic-Stuckey], all of Virginia, afterwards settled in Clinton Co. After Mr. Nash was married, he settled in Clinton Co., and was engaged in farming, where he lived until 1860. He then moved to this township, where he bought 156 acres of land, one mile west of East Liberty, where he now resides. He has five children--Hannah E. born Aug. 29, 1840 (now Mrs. Hiram Harshfield); Amy C, born Feb. 7, 1842 (Mrs. Preston J. Thornton, of Saline Co., Mo.); Mary J., born April 27, 1844 (Mrs. Marion Vanica, of Monroe Tp.); Maria L., born July 13, 1846 (Mrs. L. Ballinger, of Hardin Co.), and William F., born July 11, 1849, was married Julv 24, 1873 to Catharine Vogel, born in Dearborn Co., Ind., March 21, 1857, daughter of Michael and Barbara (Dellaman) Vogel, both born in Germany. They had five children, Mrs. Nash being the eldest. Her mother is deceased her father is a resident of Cincinnati. Three children were born to William F. Nash and wifeCharles A., born June 26, 1874, Clarissa B., July 12, 1878, infant deceased. William resides with his parents. His father, whose name heads this page, is now fast approaching 70 years; he is an excellent citizen, a worthy and accommodating neighbor,

Revolutionary War Records
Recall that according to the biography of Nathan's son John Nash, "John's grandparents on both sides, were soldiers in the war of the Revolution."
John's grandparents were Nathan's father Edward Nash, and Mary Jane (Polly) Ward's father, who was presumably William Ward.
Edward Nash
No Edward Nash has been found in any existing Maryland militia records.
There is a record in the 7th Maryland Regiment of the Continental Line for an individual ambiguously identified as Edward Nash or Edmond Nash or Edmund Ash.
Based on the lack of finding any other contemporary individual with the same or similar name, it is supposed that this individual could be, perhaps, the Edward Nash who was found later in Huntingdon County. For that reason, here is a summary of this individual's service record:
Edward/Edmond Nash/Ash served in Capt. Mountjoy Bayly's company of the 7th Maryland Regiment.

This original document shows that "Edmond Nash" was at the siege of Fort Mifflin (Mud Fort) on Mud Island in the Delaware River downstream of Philadelphia. The siege lasted from late September to 16 November 1777.
This document is not dated, but similar accounts of clothing deliveries were dated October 27th and 30th,** although it might have been dated as late as November 4th.
It must have been just after the evacuation of Fort Mifflin by the Americans that Edward Nash became "off Rolls".

William Ward
As noted previously, records show a William Ward living in Dublin Township, Bedford County (later Springfield Township, Huntingdon County) from 1775 onwards. Thus it is most likely that during the Revolutionary War he would have served in the Bedford County militia.
The Bedford County militia was divided into three battalions. The Second Battalion of 1777 and the redesignated Second Battalion of 1781 (formerly the Third Battalion) included Dublin Township.
The companies associated with the Second Battalion are shown below. Assuming that William Ward did indeed serve during the Revolutionary War, then from 1777 to 1780, he might have served in Thomas Blair's company. From 1781 to 1783, he might have served in Thomas Blair's or David Walker's company, or perhaps in George Wilson's or Gavin Cluggage's company.
http://www.motherbedford.com/Battalion.htm
The Militia Battalions of Bedford County
...
As initially set up for the year 1777, and continuing until 1782, the Bedford County Militia was composed of three battalions. ...
The First Battalion 1777
...
The Second Battalion 1777
In the year 1777, the region from which the Second Battalion was recruited included basically what is today Fulton County.
The Second Battalion was commanded by Colonel George Ashman in 1777. Colonel Ashman was assisted by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Paxton and Major Martin Longstrath.
The various company Captains were as follows: Co. 1 - James Martin, Co. 2 - Hugh ---ther , Co. 3 - Thomas Blair, Co. 4 - John Hamilton, Co. 5 - James Gibson, Co. 6 - Abraham Covalt, Co. 7 - James Warford, Co. 8 - Evan Shelby.
The Third Battalion 1777
In the year 1777, the region from which the Third Battalion was recruited included primarily what is today encompassed by Blair and Huntingdon Counties. (Blair County being composed almost entirely of Frankstown Township; Huntingdon County being composed of Hopewell, Barree and a portion of Frankstown Townships.)
Note: Although not indicated, Thomas Blair's Company No. 3 of the Second Battalion 1777 probably covered at least part of Dublin Township.
Also, about 1780, Shirley Township was erected from Dublin Township.
In the year 1781 the numbering of the Battalions and Companies changed.
In 1781, what had been the Third Battalion in 1777, now became known as the Second Battalion of the Bedford County Militia. The township areas from which this newly named Second Battalion drew its recruits stayed the same as in the year 1777 when it became known as the Third Battalion with the one exception of the inclusion of Dublin Township [and Shirley Township] in its northern Bedford ranks. Hugh Davidson took the place of Samuel Jack as the battalion's Lieutenant Colonel, and John Shaver advanced from Captain to Major. The new company Captains for this 1781 Second Battalion were as follows:
Co. 1 - John Spenser, Co. 2 - David Walker, Co. 3 - John Dean, Co. 4 - John Thorlton, Co. 5 - George Wilson, Co. 6 - Jacob Gonow, Co. 7 - Gavane Clugage, Co. 8 - Thomas Blair (who had been a captain in the Second Battalion of 1777).
