The Molecular Spectroscopy Group
The MSG is an interest group of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK.
Our spectroscopic interests include (but are not limited to):
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy
Mass Spectrometry (MS)
Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS)
Infrared (IR), Near-Infrared (NIR)
Terahertz Spectroscopy
UV/Vis Spectroscopy
Fluorescence Spectroscopy
EPR/ESR Spectroscopy
Raman Spectroscopy
And others...
The group works together with the RSC, related interest groups and external organisations to deliver scientific meetings covering the latest advances in the field of Molecular Spectroscopy.

Upcoming Meetings
The MSG Online Seminar Series continues in 2024.
Next seminar: Thursday 24th January 2024, 14:30 - 15:30 BST
We will be moving to a bimonthly cycle for the seminar series in 2024, with the first seminar of the year having a theme of Portable Spectroscopy.MSG Spring Meeting: 21 May 2024, Burlington House, London
Molecular Spectroscopy for Disease Diagnostics
The Molecular Spectroscopy Group are holding a one-day meeting at Burlington House to bring together scientists working on molecular spectroscopy techniques for disease diagnostics applications. The meeting will cover a variety of sample matrices, techniques, and associated data methods. There is a discounted registration rate for early career scientists, who are encouraged to submit an abstract for a contributed talk or poster. Travel bursaries are also available through the MSG.
Invited speakers
Prof. Josephine Bunch, National Physical Laboratory and Imperial College London.
Prof. Peter Gardner, University of Manchester
Prof. Mark Bradley, Queen Mary University of London
Dr Jenifer Mizen, Owlstone
Dr Angelika Skarysz, Loughborough University

MSG-JPAG Symposium
The future of Spectroscopy: New capabilities and new applications
MSG and JPAG held a very successful one-day Symposium on this topic at RSC Burlington House, London on Thursday 11th May.
The Symposium featured podium presentations from:
Dr Kofi Asare-Addo - University of Huddersfield
Dr Sulaf Assi - Liverpool John Moores University
Dr K. L. Andrew Chan - King's College London
Professor Richard Guy - University of Bath
Dr Bethan McAvan - AstraZeneca
Professor Alison Nordon - University of Strathclyde
Dr Tran Pham - GlaxoSmithKline
Dr Patrick Wray - Bristol-Myers Squibb
In addition, there were some excellent poster presentations.
Thank you to the event partners Metrohm Ltd, Drug Development Solutions and Blue Scientific for their support for the event.
Duncan Bryant Award 2022 WINNER
The MSG is delighted to announce that the winner of the Duncan Bryant Award for 2022 is:
Mark-Adam Kellerman of UCB Pharma (ex-University College London).
Mark wins the Award for his paper:
"NMR reveals functionally relevant thermally-induced structural changes within the native ensemble of G-CSF"
Mol. Pharm. 2022, 19(9), 3242-3255
DOI: 10.1021/acs.molpharmaceut.2c00398
Mark is pictured receiving his Award, a framed picture recognising the life and career of former MSG Chair Duncan Bryant in whose memory the Award was instigated.
