Day 2: Anti-black racism in the US

  • Read-aloud: racism--Don't Touch My Hair and All the Colors We Are

  • Discuss: what is the connection between these two books? How does the history of race in the United States lead to these two present day realities?

Day 3: Poverty

  • Read-aloud: Maddi's Fridge and On Our Street

  • Discuss: Emotions related to poverty. Actions we can take to help end poverty

Day 4: Immigration

  • Read-aloud: Dreamers and Two White Rabbits

  • Discuss: Why might someone need or want to immigrate? How can we help immigrants seeking a better life?

Day 5: Sexism & Gender Identity

  • Read-aloud: It Feels Good to Be Yourself and Jacob's New Dress

  • What does gender mean? How can we be more gender inclusive?

Day 6: Climate

  • Read-aloud: Greta and the Giants

  • Newsela: what causes climate change and pollution? Steps kids can take personally and how to push people in power to make big changes

Day 7: Children's Rights

  • Read-aloud: I have the right to be a child, Malala: A Brave Girl from Pakistan

  • What rights should children have? How can children with more privilege stand up for kids with less?

Day 8: Voting rights

  • Read-aloud:

  • News or activity on history of voting rights in the US. What makes it hard for some people to vote? Why?

Day 9: Power

  • Read-aloud: The Power Book

  • Which groups tend to have more power? Is that fair? Who should be making decisions? What power do we have to impact change? What is your circle of influence and what is your responsibility to the world?
