CLOSE PROGRAM - http://www.columbus.gov/close
Description
Both pavement repairs and pavement relief joints will be marked out in pre-construction markings. If it appears that another pavement repair is needed on a street, contact supervisor. The contractor is approved to use either asphalt 301 or 448. In the case of 301, the maximum lift is 6 inches. If using 448, the max lift is 3 inches. The proper depth for repairs is determined by the condition of the base. The contractor must tack the bottom and all vertical faces of the holes before pouring asphalt. Pavement repairs are done most commonly by pouring asphalt to the existing surface level; in this case the top layer would be milled off and replaced with a surface layer. The other option is that that the asphalt can be left an inch and a half lower than the existing level and properly wedged. In the event of rainfall, contact supervisor to determine if operation needs to be stopped.
Inspectors should obtain a ticket for each truck load that is placed. Check to make sure that the asphalt they are using is on the approved jmf list. In the case of 301, the conversion factor is always 2. If the paving operation moves from one street to another, write the street name on the first and last asphalt tickets that were used on that street. On the final ticket for the day, include the total tonnage and payments for each individual street and course. At the end of the day, agree with the foreman about any leftover or unused asphalt and write on the ticket the amount, if any, of tonnage that is sent back and not paid for. If the pavement repair is large enough, temporary striping will be needed. If temporary striping is needed, it must be in place before the contractor leaves the street for the day.
