Brown Trout

The brown trout is a common fish in Scotland but one that may conceal unsuspected genetic diversity. The situation in Loch Laidon, as revealed by Ron Greer and Eric Verspoor, is a pointer to the evolution that may have occurred in many Scottish lochs during the last 10,000 years since the ice retreated.

Ron Greer and Eric Verspoor have discovered what they consider to be four species of trout in Loch Laidon and are calling for their protection from introduced non-native species of fish. Follow the link to the Telegraph article for a full account of their findings.

In Loch Rannoch there are many small brown trout as well as some Ferox trout which were once upon a time caught every spring near the dam. Ferox trout are able to become very large because they eat other fish including smaller trout.
