Raven

At this time of the year there are not many bird species to be seen on Craig Varr. The one that you can almost guarantee to see is the raven. Today there were nine, a group of seven to the north and a pair on Craig Varr.

Their calls range from a deep guttural croak to a short somewhat sinister dog-like yap.

As they circle darkly around you in remote places bear in mind that they may not always be concerned for your welfare. They may secretly be hoping that you will collapse and that they can then pick your bones clean, after all that’s what they did on the battlefield at Culloden. Where ravens and wolves coexist, as they once did in Scotland, they cooperate. They ravens warn the wolves of the approach of bears and the wolves allow the ravens to feast on a carcass.

They may have macabre feeding habits but they are very intelligent and wonderful aerial acrobats being able to fly upside down when the occasion demands.
