Transport issues in Delhi
“Traffic congestion in Delhi” is an article written by Rumani Saikia Phukan in 2014 in which she tells us about one of the biggest problems of the capital of India, the transport. Delhi is the capital city of India and one of the most common and annoying problems in the city is getting caught in a traffic jam, because Delhi is one of the fastest growing and developed cities in the world. But why Delhi have this kind of issues? In the last years, Delhi has had one of the biggest increase in the number of vehicles. A recent study shows that more than a lakh (100.000) of vehicles use the roads of Delhi every day. On the other hand, the roads of the capital also increase the rate, but that was not enough to cover the transport problems (is estimated that there are about 80 vehicles per km). Those are not the only problems because if you arrive to an intersection the time ranges of waiting in queue are around 2-4 minutes. One of the characteristic of India is the diversity but is also a transport issue because they have a mixed traffic which includes cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, animal driven carts and people. The fast growth in population and in workforce also contribute to the transport issues, as a result people prefer to use private cars to arrive to jobs besides the public transport system in Delhi is not being able to keep the population under control, therefore more people use privates cars. The construction of the metro is another problem, because when they start the construction, the streets were damaged and the repair is a long process.
In this task the teacher asks us to pick a URBAN PROBLEM or CITY ISSUE, then in pairs we have to start a little research about an urban problem that we choose. Consequently with our investigation we have to pick one of the articles that we read about our problem and make a summary about it.
In our opinion the transport issues that Delhi has, is something very difficult to do, the growth of the country in general and in population in the last years could be always an issue to try solve the problem. Besides the culture and diversity, and the economic inequality are facts that affects directly to the transport because some people can use a private car to get to anyways but others have to use the public transport or their animals carts, they also have a mixed traffic with animals, cars, motorcycle, etc...Maybe you think that the culture or money are not really a problem but they are.
