Procedure
1. Locate the x20 Diagnostic Link Connector near the RH strut tower in the engine bay and unscrew the cover.
2. Depending on your vehicle, do the following:
OBD2 port & x20 Diag Connector (Female):
-Connect Pin 14 to Pin 18 to put the ECU in Write mode
-Connect Pin 2 to Pin 17 to bridge the OBD2 port in the car to the ECU which enables flashing via obd2 port inside the car
x20 Diag Connector only (male):
-Open 20 pin adapter and internally connect pin 14 to pin 18 to enable Write mode
Note: pin numbers should be printed next to each pin in very small text.

3. Turn the ignition on, and use MS41 Quickflash to read/write the ECU.
Alternatively, e36s equipped with an obd2 port in the car can purchase a jumper plug to painlessly enable flashing from inside the car at https://www.msportparts.com/collections/electronics/products/msp-e36-ms41-pnp-write-access-ecu-programming-plug-in-obd2-only
