Bench Rig - WIP May 8

There are lots of ways of building a bench rig depending on how tidy you happen to want to be. I am going to document the way I have built mine and attempt to be tidy.

Tools Required:

- Wire cutters of some fashion

- Soldering Iron

- Smallest flat head screwdriver from a micro screwdriver kit.

Parts Required:

- Data Link Connector 20 Pin

- DME Harness Plug

- Power Supply ( I have been told that at idle the dme draw 120 mA, and with the ignition switch on 200-220mA and that a 12v 2 amp power supply is adequate... But I have a 14 volt, 4 amp lap top power supply that will hopefully be able to sustain close to 14 volts for the successful writes.)

- power adapter plug male and female

- 2 switches

- 2 - 12 vdc indicator lights

- Project Box

Materials Required:

- Wire

- Solder

- Shrink tubing

- Electrical Tape

- Micro-Screwdriver / Pick

Step 1: Preparing the DME Harness Plug

So many wires...

DME Plug

Let's take a few out. The plastic plug releases easily from the sides with a small screwdriver or pick and the little pins come out very easily.

The big pins on the other hand suck. There are clips on both side but you just have to release the one side completely. If you jam your smallest micro flat head screwdriver in the top on the narrow side you can compress the pin and remove the wire. Push wire in all the way. Press screwdriver in all the way. Pull wire. Good luck.

I will save the spare connectors in case I have the opportunity to hang some fake devices (aka emulator) off of the harness later.

From DME to 20 Pin Diagnostic Connector

26 - Battery (+) => 14 Red

28 - Ground Distribution => 19 Brown

49 - (ignition switch) 12v=> 12 Blue

60 - Programming Voltage => 18 Green/BU

88 - to k-line in flasher => 20 White/Violet

Black box to hide my rat nest of wires.

I haven't confirmed the circuit yet but I suspect 14v 5 amp is the rating.
