Upgrade from Ubuntu Hardy to Intrepid

Post date: 29-Jan-2009 15:07:41

Although Hardyis an LTS distribution of Ubuntu, I finally upgrade to Intrepid, mainly to solve a problem of configuration with Skype (which does not worked properly when a multimedia player is running)... Moreover, nowadays I suppose my laptop will be obsolet in couple of years, so, Why should I be conserned about the status of the distribution?

In order to upgrade, first go to System --> Administration --> Software Sources

And in the Update tab, select Normal releases in Release upgrade section. When you are closing the windows, the sources list needed to be refreshed.

Now, go to System --> Administration --> Update Manager. After checking for updates, in the windows an option to upgrade the distribution appears. If you click it, the computer check all the package and will tell you how many package are going to be removed (yes, some of them are removed), installed or upgraded. Be aware that the process may stand long time, and you should be check in it from time to time, 'cause you should accept some required permits.

KNOWN PROBLEMS

When the whole process was finished, and the computer restart, I realice that the wireless card was not installed. I went to forums, google, blogs, et cetera... but I couldn't solve it. However, using the shell command

[> sudo lshw -C network

I knew that my laptop's wireless card is

*-network

description: Wireless interface

product: PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection

vendor: Intel Corporation

physical id: 0

bus info: pci@0000:0c:00.0

logical name: wmaster0

version: 02

serial: 00:1f:3c:91:03:97

configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwl3945 ip=192.168.2.2 latency=0 module=iwl3945 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11abg

Since it was working (pretty well) on Hardy, I just reinstalled the kernel modulii as follows, go to System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager, in the left column select Status (in the lower part) and then in the upper part select Installed. In the search bar type 2.6.27-11-generic and select ,

as marked above.

Apply the changes, restart the computer. That's how it works for me.

Enjoy!
