Awards/Letters

Each year, outstanding students demonstrate three important things: Confidence, Character, and Camaraderie.  In this program, only the students that go above and beyond are recognized with several different awards and honors.  After all, if the award was easy to get, it wouldn't be worth much!

Award #2 OUTSTANDING CHORAL MUSICIANS

Near the end of the school year, there is an assembly in which our hard working seniors are recognized.  To earn this award, you must be a senior in Harbor Singers or Treble Choir, maintained good attendance, and continually demonstrated a respectful attitude towards peers and the choir director.  Special consideration will be given to those students who have performed a solo in the Choir Department (Cupid Song, Pops, etc.), have participated in more than one ensemble at a time, and have a marked improvement in their performance skills.

Award #3 TREBLE CHOIR MEMBER OF THE YEAR

Our Treble Choir is made up of many students who genuinely love to sing and perform.  However, one student stands apart in attitude and commitment to musical excellence.  It is for musicians like this that we award the title of “Member of the Year.”  Every year, one student's name will be engraved on a plague that is kept in the choir room.  When questions about music interpretation are asked, the student gives an answer that shows a dependable and well developed musical maturity.  This is given to a student who shows academic growth, eagerness to be involved, a helping spirit, and an attitude of support for the group and fellow singers.

Award #4 MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR

The award for the Musician of the Year goes to one or two seniors in Harbor Singers who fits the following description.  This person must be able to deliver a song as professionally as possible, no matter how rare or often that happens.  The audition is memorized and fully developed and the performance is about communication with the audience.  After all, an amateur practices until something is right, but a professional practices until it’s never wrong.  Outside of being a performer, a successful musician is willing to try new things.  They understand that music is partly meant to stretch the boundaries of what we feel is comfortable, that it is an exact science, and that it is a study of history, math, language, culture, art, and humanity.

They must have the musical knowledge and technique to teach peers and to lead peers in a deeper understanding of why it is that we sing.  This person should also show support for all the choirs, showing a clear understanding that we are all one program, all one choir and all exploring our love for singing.

And finally, this person must also demonstrate courteous professional concert etiquette on stage, off stage, and in rehearsal.  Rehearsal might even be the most important since hours and weeks and months are spent preparing something that lasts roughly 4 minutes.  The mark of a true and successful musician is self-motivation, strong attendance, the constant development of theory and ear training, a healthy attention to detail, and the encouragement or inspiration of others to continue their aesthetic growth.  The name of the recipient for this award will be engraved on the awards plaque and displayed by the Choir Room.
