This animation illustrates how certain stars (circumpolar) never descend below the horizon for latitude 42 degrees north (Chicago), while others do. Note that the period of time is 24 hours (the blue sky is turned off). Of particular interest is the fact that the "wheel of stars" makes one rotation plus about an extra degree. Thus in one year (approximately 365 days) the wheel of stars will rotate about 366 times.
Which way are the stars turning, clockwise or counterclockwise? Can you justify this in your mind?
