There are various terms used to describe how planets "line up" with the Earth and the Sun.When they line up in the order "Sun, Earth, planet", we say that the planet is in opposition to the Earth. Only Superior Planets can be in opposition. For Inferior Planets, when the lineup is "Sun, planet, Earth", we say that the planet is in inferior conjunction to Earth. If for an Inferior Planet the lineup is "planet, Sun Earth", we say that the planet is in superior conjunction to the Earth. For Superior Planets, if the lineup is "planet, Sun, Earth", we say that the planet is in conjunction with Earth (no superior or inferior adjective is used).
