After spending the night in Tok, Alaska, we gassed up first thing this morning and got back on the Alaska Highway (A2) and headed to Canada. We stopped just west of the border for a break, and ended up eating some of the smoked salmon jerky Ray had given us. Ed, Mark, and Tom really liked it. Carey had to eat two candy bars to get the taste out of his mouth. Sorry, Ray.
We had beautiful weather to travel by today, thus our time on the old heave highway wasn’t near as bad as it had been a few days ago. We all still hit a few bad spots, but were able to steer away from the vast majority of the really nasty dips. The pictures provided of the dips don’t do them justice at all.
We stopped for lunch at the Burwash Landing Resort just east of Destruction Bay. The restaurant had a very nice view of Kluane Lake. After lunch we stopped and got gas a few miles down the road at the Talbot Arm gas station. It was here where we had spent the night and had dinner several nights back when we were headed the other direction.
Carey, separated from the group again (long story; some other time), saw a large black bear about 15 miles outside of Whitehorse. The bear was initially on the left side of the road. Carey turned around to get another look and to take a picture, and watched the bear lope across the road. The bear ran around a little bit in the right-of-way, then headed off into the woods before a picture could be taken. Curses…
We made it to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, about nine o’clock. We lucked out and got hotel rooms at the first place we checked. We rode about 385 miles today and lost an hour since we’re now back in the Pacific time zone.
