How this all came together...

We have received several inquiries about how this trip came about and how the four us became a part of it. Maybe the following can answer these and provide a little insight into our trip and the planning.

Tom Lenz and Mark Limbird are friends from their USAF days in the mid-sixties. Tom’s wife Karen lost her battle with cancer this past August. Tom and Karen had made several tours of Canada and the USA on motorcycles. Last fall (October) Tom visited Mark in Arkansas and discussed making a “Trip of a lifetime”, motorcycling to Alaska and back. Mark agreed to make the trip with Tom and began looking for a motorcycle to make the trip.

In November, Mark bought his motorcycle and shared the fact of his recent purchase with his friend Ed Williams. When Mark told Ed that he and Tom were going to make the trip to Alaska, Ed’s comment was,”Count me in, tell me when we are leaving and for how long.”

Carey Coss is Mark’s brother-in-law. At family gatherings over Thanksgiving and Christmas, Carey learned of the trip and was asked about going. After making several work arrangements, Carey committed to the trip in February.

Mark prepared the trip itinerary with weekly and sometime daily input from the other three. The goal of the trip was to go to Alaska and see as much as possible on the way to and from.
