At the edge of an ancient Roman burial ground is the Basilica of St. Paulin. It was built on the bones of the 358 who died in exile in Phrygia Bishop Paulinus Basilica by Bishop Felix (386-398). After several destructions during the 5th century, the reconstruction was to begin in about 480. In1093 a fire the ancient building damaged the ancient building. 

Under Archbishop Bruno (1102-1124) began with the construction of a three-aisled basilica. The consecration of the church took place 1148 The cross-vaulted building had low cross-houses, imposing twin-towered facade, flanked by stair towers reminiscent of the west facade of the cathedral. 1673 the French occupied Trier. For military reasons in 1674 both the convent building as well as the Romanesque church were blown up. 

1730 began with a Baroque building. The designs for the single-nave Baroque church probably of Christian Kretschmar come. The equipment was carried out according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. In 1757 the church was consecrated. 1794 French Revolutionary troops occupied Trier. 

Magnificent ceiling paintings by Christoph Thomas Scheffler show the history of St. Paulinus of Trier and the martyrs. The choir stalls, as well as other items of equipment come from the workshop of the sculptor Ferdinand Tietz Trier. The high altar was also carried out according to the plans of Tietz Neumann. 

Organ

The organ of St. Paulin was completed in 1756 by the organ builder Trier Romanus Benedict Nollet. The rich organ was built by Balthasar Neumann details in the workshop of John Seitz. In 1858 the organ works were renewed by Wilhelm Breidenfeld. The existing housing remained. The Bonn organbuilder Klais made important modifications in 1934.
