The Tugt- og Børnehuset was founded in 1605 by Christian IV as a home for orphans and stray children in Christianshavn Torv in Christianshavn.  Homeless childrren were brought here and were trained in a particular craft.  Half of all children brought here died of disease and 20 percent of them fled.  The institution produced fabric for military uniforms.  The home was also used as a penal institution for adults known as "Kvindefængslet paa Christianshavn [women arrested in Christianshavn].

A new building of baroque style was built in 1739-41 by Philip de Lange.  From 1742 male criminals from all over the country were brought here and put to hard labor.  Conditions in 1787 were unhealthy and filthy and reforms were purposed, but they were without support of the administration.   In 1790 the name was changed to Tugt- [discipline], Rasp- of Forbedringshuset [improvement or correction] institution.  In 1817 there was a violent prisoner rebellion here.  From 1870 it was a penitentiary.  A new prison was built in 1861-1864 by Nebelong.  It was demolished in 1928.  Source: Wiki
