Background: Growing up, Sasuke adored his older brother Itachi and always wanted to spend time with him, but that all changed the night Itachi massacred their clan, sparing only Sasuke's life.  Sasuke vowed to take revenge and spent his life working towards being strong enough to do so.  When he's first put on a team with Naruto and Sakura, Sasuke is convinced they'll only get in his way, but with Kakashi's threat of him not receiving any ninja training, Sasuke takes on board the lesson of teamwork.  His teamwork with Naruto is fragile because Naruto's progress threatens Sasuke's pride.  Seeing little progress in himself, Sasuke abandons the Leaf Village despite attempts made by his teammates and peers to stop him, and joins Orochimaru, who is looking to take control of Sasuke's body for himself.

Three years later, Orochimaru makes his move, but it backfires completely when Sasuke overpowers him.  Sasuke then forms a team with Hozuki Suigetsu, Jugo and Karin, and goes in search of Itachi.  When he finds his brother, it's a difficult battle but eventually he wins, finally gaining his revenge.  But then "Tobi" reveals the truth to Sasuke.  Itachi had been given the choice of his clan or his village and, longing for peace, Itachi chose the village but couldn't bring himself to kill the younger brother he loved above all else.  Itachi left the village and painted himself the bad guy so that Sasuke would still believe his clan was something to be proud of.  Consumed by grief, Sasuke spiralled down a dark path and joined the Akatsuki, attacking the five great shinobi nations and aiming for the tailed beasts.

During the war against Madara and Obito, Sasuke returned to the village, claiming he would become Hokage, and joined forces with Naruto to defend the village he'd been born in, which his brother had sacrificed everything for.

After the war, Sasuke calmed down a great deal.  He still missed his brother, regretted having killed him, but chose to ensure Itachi's sacrifice wasn't in vain.  Having calmed down, Sasuke let go of a lot of anger, including that which he held towards Kakashi for daring to face him with the Sharingan the time they'd faced each other after Sakura's failed attempt to kill him.  Beginning to see similarities between himself and Kakashi, Sasuke opted to bury the hatchet and finally take on board Kakashi's comment about forging new bonds to help fill the void of those lost and ease the pain.
