Background: Minato was Jiraiya's pupil and enjoyed reading Jiraiya's books, the first of which was titled the Tale of a Gutsy Ninja. When Minato's wife was expecting, Minato asked Jiraiya for permission to name his son after the hero in that book, in the hopes that the child would grow up to be like him. Jiraiya joked at the time about that making him the child's godfather. Unfortunately, when Naruto was born the nine-tailed fox went on a rampage and both his parents died that day, the fox being sealed inside Naruto.
Naruto grew up with most of the village hating him and never understanding why until Mizuki used Naruto to steal the Scroll of Sealing and revealed the truth to Naruto. With Umino Iruka defending Naruto from Mizuki's accusations, Naruto is moved to tears and jumps in to defend Iruka from Mizuki's attack. Having failed the Clone Jutsu every time in class, Naruto hadn't graduated, but replacing the technique with the Shadow Clone Jutsu, a Jônin level Jutsu he learned from the scroll, Iruka passes Naruto, giving him his own headband. On his team, Naruto views Sasuke as a rival, but also as a friend and the brother he never had.
When Sasuke leaves the village, Naruto tries his hardest to bring the Uchiha back, and even after that's failed and he almost dies, Naruto never gives up on Sasuke. He took Kakashi's lesson about rules and comrades to heart and will never give up on a friend, no matter what. His determination never wavering, Naruto has inspired many, earning respect and the friendship he had always wanted growing up.
When Sasuke returns to the village and is regarded by others with suspicion, Naruto remains firm, fiercely loyal and determined to defend Sasuke from any accusations. He also makes it a point to defend his comrades from themselves, refusing to allow them to loathe their own existence.
