Background: The only son of Konoha's White Fang, Kakashi lost his mother at a very young age.  Showing a lot of promise; Kakashi graduated from the Ninja Academy at the age of five and was promoted to Chûnin at six.  When he was eight years old, Sakumo failed a mission and was disgraced and committed suicide, so Kakashi began to hate the man and followed rules by the book.  At nine he was joined by teammates Uchiha Obito and Nohara Rin.  He did not get along with Obito and showed no interest in Rin despite her attraction to him.

At thirteen, Kakashi's life took another sharp turn when Obito taught him the lesson he'd later hold dear to his heart ("Those who break the rules are scum, but those who abandon their friends are even worse than scum") and sacrificed himself to save Kakashi as well as giving him his Sharingan eye, to replace the one he'd lost protecting Obito.  Obito's lesson also allowed Kakashi to forgive his father.  Unfortunately, Kakashi lost the rest of his team too, Rin was killed by intercepting Kakashi's Chidori, and their sensei Minato died in saving the village from the nine-tailed fox.  Kakashi spent some years as a member of the Anbu Black Ops.

At the age of twenty six, Kakashi took on a Genin team consisting of Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura and Uchiha Sasuke.  His students reminded him of his own team and seeing himself in Sasuke he focussed on the Uchiha's training during the time of the Chûnin Exams because only an Uchiha could safely learn to use his Jutsu; the Chidori.  After Sasuke's defection to join Orochimaru, Naruto left with Jiraiya and Sakura trained under Tsunade.

Naruto returned three years later and was put into a three-man cell with Kakashi and Sakura.  Kakashi had, by this point, learned to use his Mangekyo Sharingan, Kamui.  The team gained a couple of new members from Anbu; Sai and Yamato.  After another two years and a war, Sasuke returned to village, affiliating himself with them once more, and quickly formed a friendship with Kakashi though neither of them could really pinpoint exactly why and simply went with it.  Sasuke quickly noticed Kakashi's attraction to Shizune and didn't hesitate to badger and cajole Kakashi into acting upon it.  Shortly after that, Tsunade stepped down as Hokage and named Kakashi the Sixth.
