I ranked Lucerne among the few Swiss cities I will love to stay for an extended period of time, along with Zurich and Basel. I want to know how it is like to live and work here. As I was there for only one Sunday and with Lucerne being a tourist destination, I saw more tourists than locals.
Just like any other Swiss city, Lucerne can be reached easily by railway. However, it is so near to Zurich that there was a day tour available for me to take a bus. Unfortunately the tour bus wasn't wheelchair-friendly and I required assistance from the driver and guide to climb aboard.
The trip from Zurich to Lucerne took about 1¼ hour with the tour guide giving a rather extensive introduction of Switzerland and information on Zurich and Lucerne. When we arrived at Lucerne, I was given the rest of the day to roam the place unguided.
I got off the tour bus in front of Bucherer's main house. Since I had six hours, I plotted a route along both sides of the canal (marked green on the map). Historical buildings from centuries ago now housing small shops gave tourists all the old world's charm.
For the first time I got to see and touch a medieval city wall complete with a tower. The Lucerne Historical Museum was on my path back and the entrance fee was CHF10. I viewed the exhibits as best and as fast as I could, keeping in mind not to lose track of the time and miss my bus. In the end I still had two hours to spare.
I decided to take a ferry-ride across Lake Lucerne. As advised by the personnel at the ticket counter, I was to hop on the 3:12pm ferry to Weggis and wait 12 minutes for the 4:05pm ferry back to Lucerne. The ferry also stopped at Verkehrshaus-Lido and Hertenstein along the way.
The houses and small buildings at lakeside exuded tranquility and luxury. The surrounding mountains gave a sense of security in their embrace. Coupled with the slightly chilling breeze, all the aches and strains my body had were washed away.
Wheelchair Accessibility
There were stair-lifts for wheelchairs at some of the old structures but I had noticed they had not been used for a long time as there were cobwebs on them. There was no instruction on who to call for assistance too.
