This is the only stop we marked on our itinerary when we decided to include a road trip in our travel. We flew to Memanbetsu to collect our rental car we booked back in Singapore and started driving southward towards Kushiro. Lake Akan is just right smack in the middle of the two places.
There is simply no way for me to describe the scenery and the accompanying rustic town. Like there is any way for anyone to describe Nature. A picture is more than a thousand words so I shall refer you to the photo album on the right.
I wasn't able to take many shots as it was difficult to hold a camera well while navigating a tough terrain. I wished I could have taken a cruise around the lake but there was not enough time. There was only so much you could photograph from one angle of the lake.
Wheelchair Accessibility
Since we were only there for a few hours, I could only say that you will need help going over the steep slopes and gravel roads. Most of the houses are two-storey shophouses so you have to climb up stairs to reach the second levels. As for accommodation, I spotted a grand hotel by the lake and near the jetty and I am assuming that it is modern enough to be handicapped-friendly.
