GCAP Campaigns

Since 2005 GCAP has developed a plethora of Global Campaigns, however these digital assets have not been sufficiently weaved together and the alliance has failed to maximise the potential of many of these efforts which have produced valuable resources which seem often disconnected from the mainstream work of the campaign.

STAND UP TAKE ACTION - 2006-2009

In Partnership with the U.N Millennium Campaign and Guinness World Records, GCAP developed 'Stand Up:Take Action', a mass mobilization campaign taking place on October 17th, 'World Poverty Day', in 2006 the campaign aimed to mobilize 1 million people around the world in order to set a World Record for the largest number of people to 'Stand Up' against an issue around the world at the same time. In its first year 23.5 million people participated, this grew to 43.7 in 2007 and 66 million in 2008 with 173.5 million taking part in 2009 with over 2000 events in 135 countries.

INMYNAME

This Campaign of 2008 was aimed at collecting petitions using a branded music video and youtube channel, the video became the number 1 video on you tube and Will.I.Am, Bono and other featured artists performed the song outside the U.N in New York during the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on the MDG's, the petition was handed over to Ban Ki Moon and hundreds of thousands of names were registered. GCAP developed this through its partners, including Oxfam, Save the Children, Comic Relief, ONE, Action Aid and World Vision

The video included embedded buttons enabling those watching to sign up and 'add their name', calling on world leaders to End Poverty by 2015. While there were significant successes, the online action was disconnected from the offline mass mobilization 3 weeks later as part of 'Stand Up' where over 60 million people participated in events and actions in 130 countries. Internally GCAP was unable to integrate and build upon the 'INMYNAME' project and southern coalitions found it difficult to engage in the project and felt there was a northern bias.

During the 2010 UN MDG Summit, GCAP organized marches around the world and 'World We Want' Charters, delivered to Government leaders outlining civil society's asks at a country and regional level. A forum outlining strategies towards 2015 was held alongside the MDG summit and campaigners met with the UN Secretary General to handover a common lobbying letter signed by over 200 international organizations.
