Nemaha county, polling nearly 70 percent of the strength shown in the vote for secretary of state at the last general election, went to the polls Saturday and turned in a majority of 1832 for the purchase of a lake-park at Kampler. The extraordinary majority far exceeded the calculations of the most hopeful of those that favored and worked for the lake. A number of townships, considered doubtful if not actually opposed, voted favorably. The decision was forecast within an hour of the closing of the polls when it was found that Seneca had voted well high unanimously, giving a majority of 940 to 34. Then Adams came in with 105 to 38, followed by Richmond with 154 to 45. When the workers learned that conservative Richmond Township, composed almost entirely of farmers, had voted "yes" there could be no doubt of success. The greatest surprise of the election was the favorable vote in townships where the lake-park committee had made almost no organized effort. Such townships were Center and Reily. Center gave the park 64 to 53 and Reily 56 to 31. Seneca's landslide vote was rather expected but when precincts like Red Vermillion and Illinois-Whitehall voted almost solidly "yes" it became clear that assent to the proposition had great strength on the farms as well as in town. Whitehall voted 65 to 2 and Red Vermillion 105 to 24. Even Neuchatel, extreme southwest Nemaha rated a doubtful precinct, voted aye 40 to 9. South Nemaha county added tremendous support to that of Seneca, Gilman, Mitchell, Richmond, Adams and Kelly and this was the movement which turned the tide strongly in favor of the lake. Illinois and Home votes almost paralleled. Corning voted 244 to 27 and Centralia 238 to 27. Harrison-Goff's contribution was 157 to 35.
