Company 1797 Enjoys Their Reunion

Saturday, August 1, 1987 was an important day for former members of the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1797. The majority of those attending were from Kansas, but some came from as far away as California. Much of the afternoon was spent renewing old friendships, looking at pictures, and reminiscing about all times spent for the Company of 1797. Jim McGinty, Seneca, a member of the company when Lake Nemaha was built in 1935, spent many hours organizing this reunion. One of the phrases repeated over and over again was " Joining the CCC was the best thing that could ever happen to me." The evening program began with a social hour and a meal at the Windmill Inn. Following the meal a memorial for the deceased fellow members was held. Levity Brothers of Hiawatha provided skits and music for entertainment. The evening guest was Ken Gustin singing several blue grass songs. Farewells were difficult to say, but there is hope that another reunion can be held in the next few years. A disappointment to the men who worked on the dam was to come back and find the efforts of their labor is gone. There is no longer a Lake Nemaha.
